The reviews are right this is a bit of a waste of money. I bought it thinking at least it would be a different past paper from the ones I downloaded and it would give me 3 different papers to try, but I was wrong to think that, it is actually the one you download when you book the exam. It's on nicer paper than I have in my printer but £19 for the privledge? Not worth it. The only benefit is that if you're doing Foundation you can get a look at how difficult the practitioner exam will be.
My advice is, buy the pocket book, buy the main big book, leave this one out of the equation.

The biggest single problem I had when I moved from working for myself as a programmer back to the mainstream was dealing with other people's code. For nearly twenty years I only had to deal with my own code. Suddenly I had to understand and change other people's code. It was quite a culture shock, and one of the most difficult things I've done.

I wish I'd found Michael's book earlier, it would have helped ease the transition. Of course, not everyone else's code is legacy code, but even if you are not handling true 'legacy' code, this book will help you deal with the problems you face.

The book is in three parts. The first is a discussion of how you go about changing software that is badly structured and has complex ... Read More:

I have to disagree with one of the other reviewers. The first edition of Kent Beck's book was a model of simplicity and clarity. The second edition however seems far less clear, and yet in places is also more dogmatic.

Whereas in the 1st edition there was a simple list of twelve practices, in the second there are 13 primary practices and 11 corollary practices. The lists of principles differ between the two books too, making it hard to understand what some people mean when they talk about XP.

Much of the management discussion has also been removed from the 2nd edition and migrated into a second book.

If you want a clear, unambiguous description of XP, I would strongly recommend trying to find a copy of the first ... Read More:

This is an important subject and there aren't many books that look at how you apply Toyota's lean manufacturing techniques to the software development business. Read some of the more general "lean" literature first before you get to this if you want to know what "lean" is all about.

Dissapointment is manifest from early on. We are told that one of the big problems of software development is that "customers just don't know what they want". I'm not really sure this adds anything new to the general debate on how software is built. I think it was okay for Brooks to take this tone when he wrote the Mythical Man Month in 1975 but surely not 30 years on.

But if you can make it through the trite homilies about the authors' children and ... Read More:

At last we have a book available that gives tips and advice on facilitating end of iteration retrospectives. Esther Derby and Diana Larsen are recognised experts in this field and have gathered knowledge from the international community of retrospective facilitators and presented it in an accessible format for readers new to facilitation.
The book will be really useful to agile coaches and team leads who want to apply retrospectives in their teams. A variety of exercises are described so that your retrospectives won't get boring and will continue to reveal process improvements that help your team optimize their process and stay sharp. This will become a well-thumbed trusty reference for agile teams.

An excellent book and a IMHO a MUST if you want to get a professional C++ (and not only) developer.
It covers lots of practical topics, unveiling advanced techniques and "hidden" features of the C++ programming language.

I would suggest to get a good knowledge of C++ first (e.g. read Stroustrup's TCPL bible) or you won't grasp most of the topics.

I must admit that reading the book I was all "Wow! You can do that?!?".
Sure, not a big deal if you are already a pro, but you won't be reading this review, I suppose.

I would suggest this book even if you intend to move to another language as it really helped me thinking about things and understanding many language features and hardcore techniques.

This review is for the 70-291 book not for 70-284, as for some reason reviews for the 70-284 book have ended up here.

The 70-291 book was a very good study guide and reference book, I would recommend it to anyone taking this the 70-291 exam. Everything is covered very well and it certainly should help get you through the exam. However, please don't expect to use this book as a sole study guide, you do need additional study material. While this book covers pretty much everything, a book on its own is not sufficient to pass the exam.

The only downside of this book is some of the practices are setup where you need to have a connection to two separate phone lines. I didn't have two phone lines so pretty much had gloss over these practices, ... Read More:
