Practical, very readable and full of sound advice which works. Genuinely useful books for new managers are rare in my experience and this is one of the best I've come across.

I would have given this a better rating, as the book seems to be very good. Unfortunately the evaluation version of Project included on the CD will only work with Windows XP (or later) or Windows 2000 SP3 (or later). My little laptop hasn't got what it takes to upgrade my operating system so it wouldn't let me install the software. Pity it doesn't tell you about that here, before you spend money on something. I feel cheated. C'mon Amazon - get your product descriptions right and send me a gift voucher or something as compensation! It tells you this when you get the book and, if you don't break the seal on the CD you can simply return it but, in my case, I work somewhere where it's impractical to return ... Read More:

recently took my foundation exam and everything i needed to know was in this book, id almost say that the questions in this book are slightly harder than the questions i encountered in the exam. like a lot of technical books this is not the easiest book to read and id recommend having small reading sessions as your mind will start switching off if you try to read too much in one session. read it through, then dip into it at various points that you cant remember, there are chapter review tests at the end of each chapter and a sample exam at the end of the book. id also recommend taking the tests with a notepad, go through the whole test with your answers, marking the ones your unsure of, then check the answers ... This book has convoluted and baffling explanations of the design patterns when compared to other books on the subject. The whole point of an example seems to have been lost i.e. a simplified or contrived scenario to clearly demonstrate the concepts. Additionally, having typos in the code is the most frustrating for someone trying to get to grips with new ideas/technology because if you try and code them yourself it simple doesn't work. There is no excuse for this - it just indicates that the book was poorly edited and rushed out.

For any developer who needs to write scalable applications this is a must for your bookshelf. It is very well written and explains how the patterns work backed up with good examples. Anyone who is unsure about how to implement a particular pattern for their solution will get a good understanding after reading this book. All the expected patterns are in there, mvc with composite, decorator, proxy and state patterns to name a few. If you are new to design patterns I'm sure you will quickly see the benefits once you start to pad out the examples with your own code.
