Simply the best book on introductory SPSS that exists.I know nothing about the author but having bought this book in the middle of a statistics open assignment I can confidently say that I love her and want to marry her. There must be dozens of books that claim to be beginners guides to SPSS- this one actually does what it says; totally brilliant.

The self-help genre rightly attracts a lot of criticism; there are a lot of charlatans out there. 'Flow', however is a book which clearly stands out. Csikszentmihalyi speaks with tremendous authority, and his education clearly extends well beyond psychology. But most importantly the book isn't about providing false hope by offering miraculous quick fixes which don't work. The book is just about educating the reader, so they they may make their own informed decisions about how to improve their lives.

The author speaks to you with a very sympathetic tone. He presents a secular, liberal acccount, but what may come as a surprise is that there is quite a lot of moralising in the book. He seems to mention on what seems like every page ... Read More:

I was drawn to this book having read the chapter about it in Tom Butler-Bowdon's 50 Psychology Classics. I had never heard of 'positive psychology' before, but its aims - to increase the happiness of 'normal' people, rather than cure the psychoses of 'ill' people - has definite appeal.

Authentic Happiness suggests that happiness should not just be a goal in itself merely because it makes us feel good - but also that it has an evolutionary advantage. I've long been aware of the way in which as negative mood can aid evaluation of a situation, but I'd never thought that when we are happy we would have the advantages of creating an expansive, tolerant and creative mindset. In short these positive feelings maximise the social, intellectual ... Read More:

If you are new to "transactional analysis" I would recommend that you read "I'm OK, Your OK" by Thomas A. Harris instead because it is much easier to understand than this book which I found very challenging at times. Another book which I would definitely recommend is "Counselling for Toads- A Psychological Adventure" by Robert de Board which was a very interesting read. It teaches the basics of transactional analysis through a story based on Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame.

I cannot recommend this book enough! Aside from the fact that I have found it personally life-changing (the simple heart-brain breathing exercise in the first chapter is worth many times the cost of the book on its own), I have, in the past few months, recommended it to many of my life coaching clients. They have all been delighted with it too.

People consider this book a contemporary classic on meditation for good reasons. It's lovely and accessible. Jon Kabat-Zinn tackles the difficult task of explaining the nonverbal practice of meditation, which many find alien or even threatening, and makes it accessible, useful and even homey. He explains meditation not only with references to classic texts, but also by recounting his own experiences, drawing parallels with Thoreau, and discussing work and family contexts. The chapters are brief, some as short as a page, each focusing on a single topic. Many are accompanied with prompting questions or simple exercises you can try immediately. getAbstract recommends this book to people interested in reducing their stress, deepening their self-awareness and sharpening ... I was hooked on William Roache's book before I even started to read it. I heard him talking to Keith Middleton on a late night midland radio show, it was like hearing my own thoughts being explained, only a litle more articulate than I could possibly have done.
I was handed down a book from my father after he passed away. It was `In Tune with the Infinite` by Ralph Waldo Trine. When I started to read `Soul on the Street` and read practically on the first page that the book my father had passed to me was also William's inspiration in his life, then I knerw I would enjoy his philosophy and outlook on life. Having now read the book, I haven't changed my mind.

The whole set of these pocketbooks are great. I liked this one as it offers great advice, in simple language. It gives you ready to use ideas and really makes you think about obtaining the positive out of many situations and so much of it from the language that we use. Some of the ideas are a little stomach turningly cheesy and seem exhausting when we are usually already tired, but on the whole a useful little book.
