I find that the 'Dummies' books tend to dumb down the subject that they are covering. For me, the best book for learning how to meditate is 'Mindfulness in Plain English' by Bhante Gunaratana. It doesn't matter that it is written by a monk - you do not need to go to a monastery or have any religious beliefs to practice meditation. For me, Buddhist monks are the real 'experts' on meditation as they have 2500+ years of experience behind them!

I can remember buying my first edition of "Use Your Head" in 1974 when I was fourteen years old just as I was embarking on my 'O' levels. Coincidentally, this was also around the time that I bought my first electronic calculator.

I was studying for something like ten 'O' levels and although I later read engineering at university and then trained as an accountant, I was thinking at that time of doing medicine and felt under pressure to get good grades in every subject. I paid a visit to Foyles in London in order to purchase a number of books that I had on a list and I also purchased my first calculator in central London on the same trip. I spotted this book on that trip and bought it out of interest even though I was rather sceptical. ... Read More:

I read this book when I was training in psychiatry and it was the most enjoyable and readable text of my training. It brings together beautifully the key concepts in psychoanalysis with stories that we were all brought up with. He writes with brevity and clarity and knows his subject inside out. Its a delight - abundant eureka moments.

Be warned, it is a little dated - which I actually found amusing.

It did!! I always knew deep down I was worth so much more than working in a large office environment and receiving no respect or recognition. I borrowed this book, rather ironically, from my employers "training library" read it on holiday, came back, and within 2 months had found the courage to hand in my notice with no idea of what I was going to do next. Best thing I ever did! 2 years on, I run two successful businesses and am very very very much happier. I would recommend you buy this and read it with an open mind, and be brave!!

It is full of anecdotes, insights and explanations, but I did struggle with reading it cover to cover partly because of the layout. I am glad I bought it, but be warned . . your learning style will heavily influence the impact this book and therefore potentially Emotional Intelligence(EI) has on you. For many attending an EI course would probably be a better starting place, since EI like Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) has lots to offer
