This book was first published in 1992, but don't let that put you off - the topics are more relevant today than ever before, particularly given the way we appear to be sliding head-first into another age of unreason. One example would be the chapter on stereotypes: very appropriate in this post 9/11 world, showing the development of prejudice towards out-groups and detailing 9 reasons why they occur (and shouldn't). If only people would read this instead of the latest anti-minority rant in their daily newspaper, we'd have a far more enlightened and tolerant public.

There are stacks of case studies in the book - well over a hundred, described in great detail (sometimes so much detail that you need to re-read the rules of the experiment ... Read More:

I was deeply cynical of this book at first because it sounds a bit dipsy and the actions involved make you feel more than a bit silly, esspecially sitting down to be hypnotised. But the CD is quite interesting because it does change the way you think - even though it may not make you truly confident in the conventional sense. I think what the CD does is give you access to a different persona which you can fit into...you imagine someone you know who is very confident (choose carefully because this works, bizarely) until ones true authentic self (ego) emerges and develops. After a month or so I found myself somewhat more confident esspecially in job interviews for example. And these days I feel about 100 times more confident than I was two years ago ... Read More:

Written by two eminent clinical psychologists this book had potential written all over it.However the potential didn't ring true for me as I was left feeling a little perplexed at the books end.

The book itself is clearly written and divided into easily digestible chapters. However the main theme is recognising and changing disruptive thought patterns and the manner in which the authors aim to achieve this appears to me to be rather simplistic and even condescending.Do not buy this publication if you only intend to read through it as there are exercises to be completed in every chapter.Honestly you would have to go to a table factory to find more tables. Also we get to follow the progress of four case studies throughout, now here's the thing they ... The book demonstrates through a series of examples how nudges could influence your decisions on a series of varied subjects: driving, credit cards, organ donations, choice of school, marriage,... Many of those topics are well developed and explained. The style is pleasant and easy to read.

The authors define two keys notions: libertarian paternalism and the opposition between Econs and Humans. Libertarian paternalism covers the ideas that private and public institutions may affect behaviours while also respecting freedom of choice. The default option will be a form of paternalism while the choice will be the libertarian part. Econs are people who "think like Albert Einstein, store as much memory as IBM's Big Blue, and exercise the willpower of Mahatma ... Read More:

This is a pretty good book, of interest to anyone who feels themselves somewhat musicophiliac and wants to know more about how music has the effect it does. Musicophilia isn't particularly focused and doesn't really go too deep into how music works on the brain, it's mostly just a string of case studies of people and conditions involving strange and intense relationships with music. It's well-written and accessible, and worth a read, though it doesn't attempt to give any major insights into why music is so important to people in general.

"Musicophilia" is preferable to "This is your Brain on Music" by Daniel Levitin, which was released around the same time and deals with somewhat similar themes, though Levitin's book includes much more technical info on music and neurology. ... Read More:

This book is an absolute gem and as relevant today as the day it was written. It is essential reading for anyone involved in human relationships at any level. That is to say all of us apart from the few true hermits. Even to those with no knowledge of psychology, the examples make fascinating reading. You will recognise people you know. You may even recognise yourself.

For the psychologists, amateur and professional, Berne achieves what most present day psychologists still find impossible. He combines Freud's personality structure with the stimulus/response psychology of Pavlov, Skinner and Watson. This is a stroke of pure genius. Even most psychologists fail to see the book in this light.

One reviewer suggests the book lacks structure which astonishes ... Read More:

A clear and well set out book detailing approximately 20 theorists who have had influences in the way we approach early years education.
I would normally dip in and out of text books but this one I was happy to read as it's set out in such a undemanding and informative way.

The book is set out with headings about each theorist's;
- Life and upbringing
- Books and writing
- Their theory
- How those theories have been put into practise and their influence

The author also critiques the theories and provides web sites and books to find out more about each one.

Whilst it's definitely a useful book and one I've found interesting, I had hoped to find some information on Maslow, Rogers or Kelly so was slightly disappointed they ... Read More:

Have suffered from depression for over 30 years on and off! . . I am not sure if a book can help. I have read loads and still find that if I am kind to myself and allow the depression to run its course, don't fight it or hide from it. (AND DON'T FEEL GUILTY ABOUT IT.) Then this too will pass. We each have to find our own way through our maze! Do we not. I wish all who are depressed a brighter future. Open your heart and let yourself in! (I FIND MEDITATION HELPS THE MOST. .JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES AND BREATH. ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE WHO YOU ARE. FIRST STEP IS TO LEARN HOW TO EXCEPT YOURSELF AS YOU ARE, THEN MAYBE ADMIT YOU NEED HELP. GOOD LUCK TO ALL. This is a real good book to start with. Then maybe you could find a Buddhist meditation group and join . It will help you find yourself. oooooommmmmm!Good luck ... Read More:
