Since reading this book I've bought it for other people, all who seem to be stuck in a rut, or unable to move themselves forward.

It's a very quick and easy read (read it in a couple of hours) but it presents a logic that seems just that ... logical.

If you're scared of change but don't want to continue along the path that you're currently on, this book offers a great perspective. Don't be afraid of what's around the corner ...

Fairly well written, and as someone who has no prior background in this field, it was easy to understand and descriptive enough to be interesting. it was not too technical that i got bogged down with terms, unlike some other neurology books i've read.

This book was given to me as a present - I would not have dreamt of buying it myself!

What can I say but that the thought process (seasoned with narcissism and treacled with worship of the self) which underpins this little book goes against all that I hold dear.

Further, it is downright bizarre and borders on the offensive at times. I will quote from it liberally below to support what I have said. Pseudo-religion for the bourgeoise, complacent and self satisfied.

"We are each responsible for all our experiences" (page xiii)

This is plainly wrong. We possess a human nature which is subject to the vagaries of the external world - famine, disease, earthquakes. These are simply beyond our control ... Read More:

24.Why Love Matters: How Affection Shapes a Baby's Brain by: Sue Gerhardt

Sue Gerhardt's style of argument can be summed up as follows. Some of the people with problem A also have B. One possible explanation for B is C. C might be linked to experiences in early years. Therefore problem A is caused by not being loved enough as a baby. This is used to explain every problem from asthma to unemployment.

Starting with the simple and uncontroversial point that babies who are cared for tend to do better than babies who are not, Sue Gerhardt's obsession with her view of how mothers should behave towards babies distorts everything from then on. She only quotes bits of scientific studies that she can use to support her ideas, ignoring contradictory evidence even if it is in the same studies she quotes. She hardly ever considers any alternative ... Read More:

I read the mixed reviews with interest, and personally agreed with the lower rated reviews, but do get the impression the book could really be helpful for some. I am a strong believer in CBT, but I think self-esteem has more 'touchy-feely' aspects that these CBT techniques, and this book could definitely do with some! In classical CBT style the book deals with acting and thinking (and therefore feeling) in ways that 'demonstrably' improve your self-esteem. The theory being when you see results you feel better about yourself creating a positive cycle. This is positive and sound advice, but what this book really lacked for me that some other reviewers also picked up on is some good old humanistic positive regard; repeated discussion about how each of us is unique and wonderful, ... This book is one of those rare occurences when an academic manages to beautifully strike a popular chord in presenting his/her field of expertise. However, beyond that, this book will transform the transactional aspects of your life.

It is a good book to get you started. Covers alot of the models in NLP and is set out so its easy to read and understand. But as i said a very basic book.

If you want some good advice as a rule of thumb on getting books on NLP avoid the new stuff. Stick to the earlier books by Bandler preferably the first ones for e.g 'From Frogs to Princes ( is a must if your serious about this subject ) not only are they humerous but are like the bible of the subject and come from the pioneers, the fountain of knowledge. Derren Brown will even give you this advise also.

In Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain, Maryanne Wolf, an expert on the reading brain, describes how our brains manage to read. Reading is not an innate activity, but it is an invention, and only a few thousand years old at that. It does not come naturally to humans in the way that walking or eating does and on the first page of this book, we learn that it is only because of the remarkable "plasticity" of our brains that we are able to achieve an understanding of the written word.

The book is divided into three parts. Firstly the history of how humans learned to read, secondly how reading is learned and how it develops, and thirdly what happens when in cases like dyslexia, something goes wrong in the "learning to read" process.
