The green Michelin guides are a classic reference. The Paris guide is more than 300-pages long and covers everything you might need to make your visit a success. The problem with this type of guide is that you only use a small part of the guide during any specific visit. As such any particular site (e.g. museum) only gets a few pages (although Le Louvre has quite a substantial allocation the Rodin museum gets less than a page). And for Paris the problem is that things change so frequently that you always end up buying another guide the next time round. My preference for visiting Paris would be for one of those guides full of photos, but you can't go wrong with a Michelin green guide.

There are frequent inconsistencies in this book - apparent even to someone who has never studied the subject in detail despite claiming it is designed for students. It seems not to have been properly checked, and that is not me being pedantic. Apart from that it is very interesting and gives a very broad and brief view of human history from the origins of civilisation right up to today's spectacular, globalised society.

This is an atlas not a history book, though the accompanying text makes the salient points very well. A double page spread for each campaign gives the high level overview at a glance. Ideal as a companion to other reading. Attractive, high quality design, cartography, paper and printing. The publishers had the good sense to stitch rather than glue the binding, so the book will sustain repeated use.
