This is a masterly compilation of the AC's 150-year history, told through the achievements of its illustrious members and others, particularly in the two 'golden ages' of Alpine-style mountaineering. The first, in the mid 19th century, was epitomised by Whymper, Stephen, Mummery and others, who hired the best local Guides and make the best use of them, eventually climbing as unassisted Amateurs. Between the Wars, Shipton, Tilman and others explored the greater ranges, unsupported, for months on end. The second age has been since WWII, with landmark ascents of the 8,000 metre peaks, first Annapurna, then Everest and Kangchenjunga, the only one to be first climbed by Britons (Band himself, with Joe Brown). A new generation of British Alpinists ... Read More:

Had awaited this edition keenly having been very impressed with the previous. I have played golf in various countries in the book. Unfortunately the researchers had clearly not been back to some of the courses in a long time. For example, I visited a course in Italy which was given a good rating to discover it had been left pretty much untended for a year and was verging on the unplayable. This year I was expecting a suitable downgrade but no, still a good score. A few bad experiences like this will drive me away - there are online resources which are better.

I've had my Collins Rambler guide to the Lake District for a couple of years now and I've done quite a few of the walks in it and found it to be a commendable guide to the lakes, especially for someone who doesn't know the area very well. The walks are clearly defined, maps are adequate (but a proper map and compass are still sdvissble), information is clear and points out areas of interest and there is a rudimentary grading system to indicate the level of proficiency/fitness required to tackle each walk. Also important is the rainproof cover so your book shouldn't get too soggy on rainy days in the hills. My only criticism is that some of the routes shown seem rather odd as they do not follow what I would regard as the most rewarding routes. The ... Read More:

As maps go this is a great map and a must have if traveling or staying in Sydney. It is very well laid out and very clear to read with prominent buildings being shown and key areas shaded different colours. The road index is also very clear but the best feature of this map is the fact that it is laminated. It rained during my visit to Sydney, so having a protected map, that didn't get soggy or torn was such a relief. Dont bother with any of the free maps or any other map, invest in this one and you wont go far wrong. Only wish that I got the Lonely planet city map of Melbourne too.

This was the first Michelin Guides I've ever bought - never again! How weird to lay it out in alphabetical order. Yes, you can find the places easily from the map in the book but it's difficult to find the place on the map from the text. You can't orientate yourself to see what is in the locality of any given place because of the alphabetical layout. I'm used to the Lonely Planet, Rough Guide and other guidebook layouts where the entries makes topographical sense and you get a sense of location.
