Eca de Queiroz is definitely the best writer Portugal has ever had. Not only the stories are amazingly well written, intelligent and funny but he also manages to grab our attention from the first to the last page in a way that no one else can. Absolutely amazing.

This book is fantastic. It is one of the most original books that i think i have ever read. The language and dialogue is so wonderful that despite the fact there is no physical or mental description of the characters you are able to picture and understand them through the language.
The book although it has very little plot is some how held together by the fact that we care so much for the characters, and when it finished i couldn't help but wonder what else might have happened on her next visit and whether she had changed.
Zazie, Unkoo Gabriel and all the other cast of characters are just so fantastic and i couldn't forget Zazie after i had put it down.
The book does sometimes employ strange spelling and long words to sentences that ... Read More:

As the novel opens, Ellen Gulden is in jail, on suspicion of having aided in the death of her mother, a woman who had been experiencing agonizing pain from inoperable cancer. As Ellen reminisces about the five months she spent caring for her mother, the novel develops into much more than the story of her mother's death. Ultimately, it is the story of Ellen's emotional and spiritual coming of age, a positive story of growth and love, not the maudlin tearjerker that one might expect on the basis of plot summaries.

When her father first asks her to come home to care for her mother, Ellen is resentful. She has been out of college only a couple of years, and her career as a journalist in New York is just starting. She resents the fact that she ... Read More:

This is the second novel written by José Maria Eça de Queiroz (about 1878). Almost all of Eça's work was done at Newcastle, where he lived (although not very happy) as a portuguese diplomat.

Cousin Basilio is the story of the forbidden love of Luisa, a married woman of Lisbon society, and his cousin Basilio, after all one of the loved themes of the 19th century.

It is surely not the best of Eça's novels, although it became very famous. Nevertheless, it is of course one of the best novels of the 19th century. Simply because it was written by Eça.

Books : Just a Minute: No.2 (BBC Radio Collection)
As a fan of "Just a Minute," who until recently only got to listen to the show via shortwave, I had heard that one would soon be able to buy tapes of the show. This audio package contains four shows, two that featuring the late Peter Jones, who in his classic befuddled style caused one to laugh so hard at his gentle humor that you forgot the sadness in his passing. In the first of the other two shows you had Julian Clary, Clement Freud, Linda Smith and Simon Jones in what I must profess is the most unusual match I had ever heard of the show. The contestants actually got rather testy at times so much so that Linda Smith began yelling out, "Fight! Fight! Fight!"

The second show included Greg Proops, an American with a rather strange accent ... Read More:

19.Black and Blue by: Anna Quindlen

Books : Black and Blue
This book reflects the sad reality of one of the many plagues affecting this world: domestic abuse. Whilst fully sympathising with Frannie, the main character, and abhorring the psychological and physical tortures she went through by the hands of her husband Bobby -including the pain reflected by their son Robert, physically untouched but emotionally damaged- I found the construction of the narrative a bit boring. There's no nicer way to say it, I just didn't think this book was a page-turner.

The issue of domestic violence, however, is dealt with realistically and I believe that some parts of this book could be of help for the many ladies out there who suffer every day.
