"A Question of Blood" is not one of the best Rebus novels but it is still an entertaining enough read in the main. There are two main elements to the plot of this book, the first is the murder of two schoolchildren by a maniac who subsequently turns the gun on himself and the second is an incident where a petty criminal who had been harassing DS Siobhan Clarke gets burned alive in his home. Rebus is suspected of his murder. Ultimately these two incidents are proved to be linked, although somewhat tenuously. The novel is always intriguing if a little long winded at times ,although this does provide opportunities for the author to further develop the character of Rebus and his close associates.

I've read several Rusdie books before over the years - Midnight's Children first, then the Ground Beneath Her Feet, and also Fury. Despite enjoying all three thoroughly (well, less so Fury, which disintegrates towards the end) I've never felt the compulsion that you get with some authors to read the entire oeuvre. A lot of people tell me that they find Rusdie hard to get into, and often give up in the first 100 pages. To do so is a great shame, as they will miss some wonderful story-telling, but I can understand their reasons - particularly with the Moor's Last Sigh. Initially, it feels a little too much like a re-hash of Midnight's children - the family saga told by the child who - as a result of the cirumstances of their birth - experiences ... Read More:

Having read - and thoroughly enjoyed - London and The Forest I must admit that I struggled from the start of Russka until about page 500. My friend advised "Life's too short" so I discarded Russka half way through - something I hate doing. However, it was tedious to the point where I would get to the bottom of the page and realise I hadn't really read it. Far too much detail and boring characters for whom I felt no empathy. If you haven't read London then do so but I can't recommend Russka. I've given this book 1 star because a) the historical research which must have gone into writing this book is immense and b) it might have got better in the second half, which is something I'm in no hurry to find out.

This is a useful book for both crime afficionados wanting tips on some more obscure new directions and for newcomers who just want to know where to start.

Each chapter recommends and reviews a selection of crime novels (over 200 in total) and there are the usual Rough Guide boxes and sidebars on related areas such as films, author profiles and crime genres. The chapters are organised thematically and range from the origins of crime fiction (Edgar Allan Poe, Conan Doyle) and the 'golden age' (Christie, Allingham, Sayers) through hard-boiled (Chandler, Hammett, Thompson) to more contemporary genres such as police procedural, espionage, serial killers, organized crime etc. The reviews maintain a fine balance between criticism and enthusiasm and cleverly ... Candace Robb has read and researched medieval history for many years, having studied for a Ph.D. in Medieval and Anglo-Saxon Literature. She divides her time between Seattle and the UK, frequently spending time in Scotland and York to research her books.

York is very close to my own home and many of the places mentioned in the Owen Archer books are still there to be seen and of course Archbishop John Thorseby is mentioned in the records of York Minster. All this adds spice for me and helps me to picture the time and events that took place. This is the second novel in what is proving to be a captivating series.

It is the middle of the 14th century in England and in the city of York the people are dying under mysterious circumstances. ... Read More:

106.Fleshmarket Close by: Ian Rankin
August 10, 2005
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Books : Fleshmarket Close
"Fleshmarket Close" is an enjoyable enough Ian Rankin thriller featuring the kind of labyrinthine plotting that is so characteristic of his novels. This offering contains a series of plot strands that are all connected ,tenuously at times. They include the murder of a Turkish refugee, the disappearance of a teenage girl, the murder of a convicted rapist and the discovery of two skeletons in a pub cellar. This is all set against a backdrop of an illegal immigration scam and a detention centre for asylum seekers. Rankin highlights the plight of these unfortunates extensively in this novel. Gerard Cafferty also makes an important cameo appearance. "Fleshmarket Close" is an absorbing read and draws the reader into an intriguing subterranean Edinburgh landscape cleverly , however ... This was the first Rankin I brought and read, I never buy books without knowing I like the author or knowing something about the book before hand usually. This was the exception, I just brought it and I never regreted it.
Rankin has a unique style, however I found it easy to "adjust" and soon got right into the story. If you haven't yet read a Rankin book, just do it - but be warned you may become hooked and pulled into the weird and strange world of his books. Having read a few more of his books since, I think this one is a great way to start reading his work, although you can easily pick up any of his books and slide right into the story.
This is indeed a strange way to bring nursery rhyme characters back to life but that's what's so great about it all "expect the unexpected" ... Read More:

110.Hide And Seek by: Ian Rankin
September 01, 2005
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Hide And Seek
`Hide and Seek' is the second book in the Rebus series. In this novel a young junkie has been found dead in a squat, underneath a drawing of a pentagram. Whilst most don't seem interested in the death, Rebus investigates and uncovers links to the sleazy underbelly of Edinburgh. This novel also sees Rebus make an unusual alliance with a young officer, Brian Holmes.
The new introduction by the author is really interesting as Rankin reflects on his work and points out the flaws that he now sees. It's fascinating to watch the progression of a novelist from their own perspective.

I liked the novel very much. It's short and pacey, but I think that the character and his network develops much further in later novels and is more psychologically and intellectually realistic later on which is why I've only ... Read More:
