112.Hide And Seek by: Ian Rankin

Books : Hide And Seek
`Hide and Seek' is the second book in the Rebus series. In this novel a young junkie has been found dead in a squat, underneath a drawing of a pentagram. Whilst most don't seem interested in the death, Rebus investigates and uncovers links to the sleazy underbelly of Edinburgh. This novel also sees Rebus make an unusual alliance with a young officer, Brian Holmes.
The new introduction by the author is really interesting as Rankin reflects on his work and points out the flaws that he now sees. It's fascinating to watch the progression of a novelist from their own perspective.

I liked the novel very much. It's short and pacey, but I think that the character and his network develops much further in later novels and is more ... Read More:

"Art", a play written by French author Yasmina Reza (1959-...) in 1994, and translated into English in 1996 by Christopher Hampton, is quite interesting. Despite the fact that it isn't overly long, it tackles difficult subjects such as the nature of friendship and art in a rather original way.

The plot is not complicated, and revolves around three male friends: Serge, Marc and Yvan. The dynamics of their friendship is substantially altered when one of them, Serge, buys a Modernist painting without consulting with the others. Serge simply fell in love with the painting, and believes it is splendid even though it is somewhat strange, all white with some lines in a different tonality of white in the middle. Marc, his assertive friend, ... Read More:

Let me first just say that this is a wonderfully magnificent novel told by a master storyteller and that every sentence is richly woven and a pleasure to read.

The story is that of a tragic love and a quest for revenge. The narrative is constructed in 5 parts. Those of India (later to be Kashmira), Boonyi, Max, and Shalimar the clown. Each section brings us close to the person involved and shares with us their loves, drives, passions and losses.

Boonyi and Shalimar share a deep love set against the background of a Kashmiri village. Yet Boonyi longs for something more, and when Max, an influenial and powerful American dimplomat arrives for the festivities Boonyi taks her chance and Max takes her away. Yet we find that neither ... Read More:

Low odds, because it's always a winning concept.

John rebus, the half alcoholic, half outcast, much hated DI is back.
He doesn't give a toss about procedure, he is insubordinate, he constantly walks a tightrope between being fired and being let off the hook.
This time, he is not only the target of the common scorn and reprimands, but also physically, as he wanders off alone in shady neighborhoods.
A serial killer stalks Aberdeen. The case has nothing to do with Edinburgh, so it should be no business of Rebus's. Yet, there are similarities to another, older serial killer's work, a killer supposed to be locked away and long since deceased. The local rags have already picked up this and both they and the brass want to know about the old ... For those who haven't read Edward Rutherfurd novels, The Forest follows a familiar theme he keeps for all his books: via several intertwined fictional families or various levels within the class structure, Rutherfurd details what it would have been like to live in the New Forest area of Southern England over the past 1,000 years. On yes, and it's the best part of 1,000 pages to boot!!

He cleverly intertwines fact with fiction (with a note at the start explaining where he has done this), allowing the reader to learn a lot about a place without actually feeling they've been in a history lesson. In the case of The Forest this is very much the case - the story is cleverly told with themes continuing between chapters more than in other books of Rutherfurd ... Read More:

119.A Question of Blood by: Ian Rankin
September 22, 2005
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Books : A Question of Blood
"A Question of Blood" is not one of the best Rebus novels but it is still an entertaining enough read in the main. There are two main elements to the plot of this book, the first is the murder of two schoolchildren by a maniac who subsequently turns the gun on himself and the second is an incident where a petty criminal who had been harassing DS Siobhan Clarke gets burned alive in his home. Rebus is suspected of his murder. Ultimately these two incidents are proved to be linked, although somewhat tenuously. The novel is always intriguing if a little long winded at times ,although this does provide opportunities for the author to further develop the character of Rebus and his close associates.

A very vague presentation of a naval story. Which character is talking to which character? No explanation of navy slang or jargon. A "fanny of war fog" perhaps.
