The fact that I read this, binge-fashion, in one afternoon speaks volumes about its prowess as a page-turner. That said, I was glad I'd read other reviews warning me that this, the first Rebus,is far from the best and that a patient reader is rewarded by starting here at the beginning, but waiting for the good stuff a few books in. Because although it did the business as a bit of a 'gripper' there were a few large-ish holes that could be punched through it, and the ending, though solid, felt a bit rushed. It's interesting to read Rankin's own introduction, where he himself indicates that Knots and Crosses has flaws that he's rather embarassed about now. So good, very good, and I'm looking forward to better still as I work my way through.

The first two rankin books in this series were among my favourite books to read. Here Rankin attempted to be too extreme i think and it took its toll on how much enjoyment could be taken from the book - i think he was a better writer with less 'in-jokes' and more down-to-earth plots.

I've read quite a few of the Rebus books over the years and am now trying to fill in all the gaps so have found myself reading some of the early books which I hadn't previously read. This is the fifth book in the series and seems to fall into a bit of a gap. It was written before the Rebus books became really famous but well after the character had been introduced.
The story is good but I found my attention lagging in the middle of the book. I know that Rebus always works better when he is suspended but it seems that he is suspended more than any other fictional policeman. Interesting that Siobhan's character was developed in more detail - lots more of her to come later.
OK book but have come to expect more than this from Ian Rankin.

I was so excited before I read this book. It was my first year at university and I was eager to discover the gems of 18th century literature. This is not one of them.

Both characters are revolting. The 'hero' is a failed raper of very low IQ (I blame the intramarriages of the ruling classes) as he cannot succeed to rape an unprotected 15 year old when she is under his sole care.

Pamela on the other hand seems to be considered either virtuous (by the 18th century reader) or oppressed but in my mind she only seemed as a calculating little wrench who is all too aware that in this environment her virginity is the only thing she has to invest on climbing the social ladder and she is using it ingeniously on simple minded Mr B. 126.The Falls by: Ian Rankin

Books : The Falls
I approached this novel as a newcomer to the world of DI John Rebus, the fact I have lived in Edinburgh for the past two and a half years notwithstanding. Unfortunately, I doubt I'll want to revisit it anytime soon.

"The Falls" is a long novel at almost 500 pages. It's just a shame the reader has to wait until the last fifty pages for any concrete action to take place. The more I think about it, the plot of this novel is as thin as the pages it's printed on, and worse still, it's contrived to the point of being silly.

Rankin employs sloppy narrative techniques to progress the plot along, and these developments usually follow long periods of storyline stagnation. For instance, two characters are introduced within twenty pages of the end with ... Read More:

127.Get in the Van by: Henry Rollins

Books : Get in the Van
I'm not a fan of Black Flag - for me punk had lost its' energy and real meaning by the early eighties. That said, you don't have to be a fan to enjoy this, and enjoy this I certainly did - by turns it is grim and laugh out loud funny, or often both at the same time. A cast of thousands including many from the long forgotten early eighties UK punk scene and of course, the Flag's indigenous scene. An incredibly evocative tale of a lost era.

This is a useful book for both crime afficionados wanting tips on some more obscure new directions and for newcomers who just want to know where to start.

Each chapter recommends and reviews a selection of crime novels (over 200 in total) and there are the usual Rough Guide boxes and sidebars on related areas such as films, author profiles and crime genres. The chapters are organised thematically and range from the origins of crime fiction (Edgar Allan Poe, Conan Doyle) and the 'golden age' (Christie, Allingham, Sayers) through hard-boiled (Chandler, Hammett, Thompson) to more contemporary genres such as police procedural, espionage, serial killers, organized crime etc. The reviews maintain a fine balance between criticism and enthusiasm and cleverly avoid the ... With Portobello, Rendell progresses her London obsession to new lengths: for years it's been obvious that Rendell loves the city and it's different corners, each with its own atmosphere, character and characters, and here, her mission is clear even from the very title: this is a book about Portobello. Which is absolutely fair enough, as atmosphere and character are two of the things Rendell are best at. In neither department does she disappoint here, either.

One day Eugene Wren, owner or an art-gallery near the Portobello Road, finds a sum of money in the road near his house. Instead of handing it in to the police, he finds it easier to stick a note on a lamppost requesting that anyone who has lost a sum of money slightly above or below that which he has found ... 130.We the Living by: Ayn Rand
January 01, 1996
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Books : We the Living
Not surprisingly, this is Ayn Rand's most realistic story since its background of the sordid results of the Communistic takeover of Russian came from her personal experience. The gritty and depressing detail is unmistakable. Even the depiction of Leo, the love-object of Kira, the central character of the novel, seems to have been molded from solid memories.

Her philosophy was still incipient at this stage (despite what she claims) but her dramatic sense had pretty much formed. Those familiar with her work will find a familiar outlook -- but keep in mind, these people are mired in the Soviet Union where despair and hopelessness were the rule. That will explain the unexpected.
