131.We the Living by: Ayn Rand

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : We the Living
Not surprisingly, this is Ayn Rand's most realistic story since its background of the sordid results of the Communistic takeover of Russian came from her personal experience. The gritty and depressing detail is unmistakable. Even the depiction of Leo, the love-object of Kira, the central character of the novel, seems to have been molded from solid memories.

Her philosophy was still incipient at this stage (despite what she claims) but her dramatic sense had pretty much formed. Those familiar with her work will find a familiar outlook -- but keep in mind, these people are mired in the Soviet Union where despair and hopelessness were the rule. That will explain the unexpected.

This book seems to be more of a farce set in World War 1 than a serious war story. The dialogue between the squadron pilots is well written and amusing but the characters aren't well developed and I couldn't tell the difference between any of them, they were just names (although maybe this was the point....). There also seem to be several pointless sub plots that don't go anywhere. The author also doesn's seem to know too much about the aircraft he's based the book around, deriding it as slow when it was one of the fastest aircraft of the war and not seeming to know that it had a fuselage mounted gun as well as the wing mounted one. Little things but irritating.

"Resurrection Men" is highly rated by many reviewers but I thought that it was one of the less memorable of the Rebus books, with recent novels like "Fleshmarket Close" and "The Falls" surpassing it in my opinion. In "Resurrection Men" Rebus is sent for retraining at a Scottish police academy following an incident in which he threw a cup of tea at his boss. There he teams up with fellow officers who are also deemed to be disruptive and insufficently submissive to their superiors.Together they investigate an old murder case during the course of which many old skeletons from the past are unearthed. As Rebus gets to know his colleagues better ,he finds that they may be linked in some way with a case he was investigating prior to his retraining which concerned the ... Read More:

A joyous collection of short stories set in the ever popular world of the New York underworld of early years of the Twentieth Century.

"Style" is a very hard thing to define, but it is always easy to recognise. Runyon's evocative, slangy, prose is perfect for the scenes he describes, lively and disreputable. The names of the characters,Nicely Nicely Jones, Dave the Dude, Rusty Charley, Harry the Horse etc etc show the humour that runs through all the tales.

The character of the narrator himself, cautious and cynical yet not without sympathy, is consistent and well sketched in each story.

Although concentrating on the the lowest strata of society, these stories have a very soft centre, and even the worst villains are at the very least ... Read More:

The fourth book of the five part trilogy. That might be someone else's hitch-hikeresque joke, but its a great way to start!

Although the book stands alone sufficiently to be read without its predecessors, I don't think it should be - the same gang are in on this one as always and therefore their introductions and character developments are not as complete and in depth as you might get by reading the other books, the characters and their quirks, or sheer madness, are the beauty of the series.

As usual the plot is nuts, the way we get from one end to the other is crazy and only a lunatic could believe that it could ever happen, but having said that the setting of the book in such a real down to earth setting and with people who at first glance aren't ... Read More:

I approached this novel as a newcomer to the world of DI John Rebus, the fact I have lived in Edinburgh for the past two and a half years notwithstanding. Unfortunately, I doubt I'll want to revisit it anytime soon.

"The Falls" is a long novel at almost 500 pages. It's just a shame the reader has to wait until the last fifty pages for any concrete action to take place. The more I think about it, the plot of this novel is as thin as the pages it's printed on, and worse still, it's contrived to the point of being silly.

Rankin employs sloppy narrative techniques to progress the plot along, and these developments usually follow long periods of storyline stagnation. For instance, two characters are introduced within twenty pages of the end with no purpose other ... Read More:

First - be warned! Though lacking the explicit volume numbers of Rankin's Brentford sequence or Armageddon trilogy, Raiders of the Lost Car Park is in fact a direct sequel to The Book of Ultimate Truths, following on immediately from where the action in that novel left off, so don't even consider reading this unless you've read the previous novel first!

Raiders Of The Lost Car Park continues with Cornelius and Tuppe's quest to enter the Forbidden Zones, rescue Rune, and pick up some wealth in the process, (though is it just me or does Rankin forget to provide an explanation for the heroic shadows in the previous book?). The scope is broadened by the introduction of some additional characters, notably put-upon detective Sherringford Hovis, his assistant Polly Gotting, and her ... Read More:

If you love charming rogues; then these are the brothers for you. Devin and Shane are the younger of the 'bad-boy' quartet; and the most charming. Devin (my personal fave) is the sherrif of the the small town, and in love with Cassie since high school; feeling unable to defend her against an abusive husband, he is the friend she turns to and falls for (but not in a 'sappy' way). Shane is the baby of the boys, and the most alarming charming and seductive to all women and he finds himself at the mercy of his complete opposite. All the characters are strong and very well described. Close your eyes and you can see and hear them. The interaction between the brothers is visual and laugh-out infectious. Enjoy the younger brothers, they are just as charming and loveable as Rafe and Jared. ... Read More:
