"Fleshmarket Close" is an enjoyable enough Ian Rankin thriller featuring the kind of labyrinthine plotting that is so characteristic of his novels. This offering contains a series of plot strands that are all connected ,tenuously at times. They include the murder of a Turkish refugee, the disappearance of a teenage girl, the murder of a convicted rapist and the discovery of two skeletons in a pub cellar. This is all set against a backdrop of an illegal immigration scam and a detention centre for asylum seekers. Rankin highlights the plight of these unfortunates extensively in this novel. Gerard Cafferty also makes an important cameo appearance. "Fleshmarket Close" is an absorbing read and draws the reader into an intriguing subterranean Edinburgh ... Read More:

If you are just discovering Miss Read, this book makes a great start. It's her first three books about Miss Read, headmistress of Fairacre Village school.(In case, you don't know, the author's real name is Dora Saint.Miss Read is a nom de plume.)
I went to a village school just like this one,and my mother told me that these stories were featured on "Woman's Hour"on the radio as the same time as I started school,so I have always felt a special affinity for these lovely stories.
Based on the author's own experiences of living and teaching in a small village, these books really bring Fairacre and its inhabitants to life, and you soon get to know them intimately, just like a real village.Ihave read these over and over again, and every time I pick up one ... Read More:

I've read quite a few of the Rebus books over the years and am now trying to fill in all the gaps so have found myself reading some of the early books which I hadn't previously read. This is the fifth book in the series and seems to fall into a bit of a gap. It was written before the Rebus books became really famous but well after the character had been introduced.
The story is good but I found my attention lagging in the middle of the book. I know that Rebus always works better when he is suspended but it seems that he is suspended more than any other fictional policeman. Interesting that Siobhan's character was developed in more detail - lots more of her to come later.
OK book but have come to expect more than this from Ian Rankin.

John Creevey could only guess at what the coded messages were for...were they the work of a drugs ring, a protection racket, a spy ring, or something else equally sinister?

Unbeknownst to him, John has stumbled upon some teenagers' spy-game, played out between two rival "centres" based in the city. They play amateurish espionage games, trying always to get one-up on one another, and leave coded messages detailing latest orders and objectives. Recently separated from his wife, John is lonely and slightly depressed, and becomes obsessed with these strange messages. Sometimes, he dedicates whole days to cracking the codes, and eventually these strange messages drag John and those around him down into a tangle of revenge and murder.

I was amazed to find that Tom Robbins was quite famous outside his native America. His works are an offshoot of Vonnegut and the adsurdists, and if you've not delved into them, then by all means start with this novel. His "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" put him on the map years ago, but he's written so many novels now that stand up to that one, he's almost better remembered for the newer ones than the one that initially made his career. As usual, his books deal with absurd and funny situations and while you need the willing suspension of disbelief, Robbins makes it all seem real--too real--even if you can't get past that. I love each of his books, which is unusual as I'm prone to like one by an author and not another. You MUST read his "Another Roadside Attraction" ... Read More:

157.Resurrection Men by: Ian Rankin

Books : Resurrection Men
"Resurrection Men" is highly rated by many reviewers but I thought that it was one of the less memorable of the Rebus books, with recent novels like "Fleshmarket Close" and "The Falls" surpassing it in my opinion. In "Resurrection Men" Rebus is sent for retraining at a Scottish police academy following an incident in which he threw a cup of tea at his boss. There he teams up with fellow officers who are also deemed to be disruptive and insufficently submissive to their superiors.Together they investigate an old murder case during the course of which many old skeletons from the past are unearthed. As Rebus gets to know his colleagues better ,he finds that they may be linked in some way with a case he was investigating prior to his retraining which concerned the murder of ... Read More:

How you rate this Inspector Rebus story may depend to some extent on what you think of the solution to the mystery, which is obviously something a reviewer ought not to give away. On the other hand it will take you nearly 500 very enjoyable pages before you get there. So far as this reader is concerned, there is nothing much wrong with the solution. I can't persuade myself that it is the job of a detective story to turn out like a factual police investigation in real life, and although the outcome should not be preposterous it ought to be imaginative, and it is imaginative here.

I have no idea whether Ian Rankin belongs to the Agatha Christie school of whodunit plotting, or to the Raymond Chandler school. We know from Chandler himself that he wrote most of his Marlowe ... Read More:

Having read all of the MacGregors series I had been waiting for this one, and boy was it worth the wait! Even though the rest of the series is about him matchmaking for his children/grandchildren its Daniel you fall in love with each time. Anna is a wonderful woman and when we go back to when she fell in love with Daniel, we see what a spunky forward thinking young woman she was. Her and Daniels battles are well written showing that his habit of thinking he knows best was something he was born with. I loved that Anna had her own mind and ignored all gossip to follow her heart. An excellent book.
The additional story of Ian MacGregor a look back generations before Daniel existed is also wonderful, an unexpected treat. I love how Nora writes of strong women even in times when they were seen ... Read More:
