i did like the story of shelby and alan, the contrast between them worked wonderfully. but the second story was so dismal, i'm surprised that the same author wrote it! the mcgregor's were represented in such a stereotypical way that gave them no depth or emotion but made them act like puppets. the actual love story was a little far fetched and just seemed too unrealistic to work. i KNOW it's a love story and meant to take you into dream land but i actually ended up not liking either of the main characters. i absolutely loved her original mcgregors stories. serena and caine really took me into their stories, you felt you were right there with them, laughing together and crying togther. but i just did not care what happened to grant or gennie, ... 172.Set In Darkness by: Ian Rankin

Having been a bit disappointed with the last couple of Ian Rankin books I have read but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I sometimes wish there were not so many story lines in one book but this one was reasonable easy to follow and with a good ending. John rebus is a good creation.

Opening with the regular cast of Jim Pooley, John Omally and the rest of the patrons of the Flying Swan, Nostradamus Ate My Hamster initially appears as though it should be marked as one of Rankin’s ‘Brentford’ series, but the conceit here is that while to all intents and purposes this is a Brentford book the plot removes Pooley and Omally to feature only at the very beginning and end of the novel, leaving a new hero – Russell Nice – to save Brentford from supernatural evil.

The novel starts strongly with a typically bonkers plot, with Russell setting out to discover if Rankin’s fictional Pooley and Omally ever existed, and ending up in possession of holographic technology from the future with which he intends ... Read More:

"America's best, forget the rest" is a motto followed by some writers. There are those who despite this attitude manage to write entertaining novels, such as Tom Clancy.
Hunter Killer, however, is not one of those novels.
The story is boring, not well told, and the constant French bashing, along with unashamed and abundant praise lavished on the USA, is a bit tiring. A little more balance would not have hurt.
In closing, this is a great book for francophobes.

This is one of my favourite series be NR. I loved all the characters, and really enjoy the interaction between the brothers. This is a great start to the series, and I couldn't put it down. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for an entertaining, sexy, romantic read.

I received this book as a freeby. My mother in law gave me a voucher from the newspaper and into WH-Smith I went. That was a while ago now and it gathered dust as in my 30's I wasn't a big reader. I must say when I finally started to read this N.R. book I wished I had picked it up sooner.
I felt the beginning was a bit morbid but was eager to find out what was going on and from that first night was hooked sometimes reading until 1am in the morning.
This book put me on track to enjoying a night time read before going to sleep. I passed the book on to my freind who again like me didn't read and she also was hooked, she even borrowed the second of the trilogy Black Rose as I was saving it for holiday and she got it read in 1 week before I went. Again the second book was as ... Read More:

Without wishing to become embroiled in the controversy surrounding this book, there is no doubting the quality of the writing. This book has a strong fantasy element (not goblins and dragons, but rather events that wouldn't normally occur in the 'real' world) and I have to admit I found the first 150 pages or so slightly confusing, but once I got used to Rushdies style, and the storyline, I found the rest of the book to be completely engaging. Rushdie uses very descriptive language and there are some beautiful phrases littered throughout this book which really highlight particular passages and make you stop to read them again. The story is original and quirky and I enjoyed reading a book i've heard so much about but have never read up until now. Although it is confusing at times, I'd ... Read More:

This may have been a more enjoyable, rewarding book with a more straightforward narrative structure but by the time you hit page 20 suddenly everything falls apart. Each new paragraph appears to be shifting onto something completely new and it's never terribly clear who is speaking.
Some of the prose is nice but i don't think this translation is too great.
If i were to pick a page at random of this book i have only recently read, not only would i not be able to tell what was going on, i would have absolutely no recollection of having read that page.
At heart it looks like it might have been a very compelling book but i found it to be virtually unreadable and completely unsatisfying.
