Just because the book is controversial, it doesn't mean it's any good. The story is disjointed, the characters are poor and pointless, and there appears to be little point in the whole thing

The fourth book of the five part trilogy. That might be someone else's hitch-hikeresque joke, but its a great way to start!

Although the book stands alone sufficiently to be read without its predecessors, I don't think it should be - the same gang are in on this one as always and therefore their introductions and character developments are not as complete and in depth as you might get by reading the other books, the characters and their quirks, or sheer madness, are the beauty of the series.

As usual the plot is nuts, the way we get from one end to the other is crazy and only a lunatic could believe that it could ever happen, but having said that the setting of the book in such a real down to earth setting and with people ... Read More:

183.All Quiet on the Western Front by: Erich Maria Remarque

Books : All Quiet on the Western Front
Great novel. The journey from childhood to manhood is supposed to be full of joy and mystery, but this novel shows, doesn't tell, of what that journey is like during a world war. This book was banned by the Nazis when they came to power in 1933. If you read this novel, you'll understand why it was banned in Nazi Germany.

I've read quite a few of the Rebus books over the years and am now trying to fill in all the gaps so have found myself reading some of the early books which I hadn't previously read. This is the fifth book in the series and seems to fall into a bit of a gap. It was written before the Rebus books became really famous but well after the character had been introduced.
The story is good but I found my attention lagging in the middle of the book. I know that Rebus always works better when he is suspended but it seems that he is suspended more than any other fictional policeman. Interesting that Siobhan's character was developed in more detail - lots more of her to come later.
OK book but have come to expect more than this from Ian Rankin.

This follows the same pattern as a lot of his previous WW2 books, still proving that this formula works, and works well. This book is longer than his average, although this makes it all the more interesting. A worthy read.

This novel is an attempt to provide a more likely retelling of the legend of Theseus. It tries to do this by omitting the fantastical elements of the legend, such as the Minotaur monster being half man half bull. All of the action and adventure here is related as conflicts between human participants only. Even the gods in this story are relegated to a more minor status. While always on the minds of the major characters, they never actually make an appearance. The implication being that they don't exist as anything more than a belief system.

Nevertheless this story is still highly unlikely. Theseus sets forth on his travels around the mythical Greek world as a very young man indeed. He conquers or guides the people he meets as he does so. He is strong, ... Read More:

The Carpenter's Pencil is an amazing piece of writing. A friend of mine at work from Galicia recommended I read this writer. I am thankful she did!
