The God of Small Things is an excellent book, one of a kind. Vocabulary that Roy has used, though unconventional and sometimes grammatically incorrect, is what makes the story powerful and unique.

In its simplest description it is a story of one family, mostly of Estha and Rahel. In its complex description it is a story that raises many questions that for generations have been unanswerable.

Caste system in India, discrimination against untouchables is only of them. Through sad tale of Velutha and Ammu, we see the price one pays for trying to overcome the barriers that society has placed. Velutha's untouchable body touched Ammu's upper-cast body in the most intimate form. He was a man, she a woman and they made passionate ... Read More:

There is no doubt this book is excellently written and Rand's use of language is first rate, but this not enough. The books flaws, of which there are numerous, simply cannot be overlooked or ignored.

The characters are on the wholly unbelievable. Their primary purpose is to serve as mouthpieces to illustrate the so-called philosophy of Objectivism.

This philosophy of Objectivism is one which is at best inconsequential (it is no coincidence that it carries little weight in philosophical circles) and at worst repellant.

If you are interested in philosophical fiction I would much sooner recommend Tolstoy or Dostoevsky.

Without wishing to become embroiled in the controversy surrounding this book, there is no doubting the quality of the writing. This book has a strong fantasy element (not goblins and dragons, but rather events that wouldn't normally occur in the 'real' world) and I have to admit I found the first 150 pages or so slightly confusing, but once I got used to Rushdies style, and the storyline, I found the rest of the book to be completely engaging. Rushdie uses very descriptive language and there are some beautiful phrases littered throughout this book which really highlight particular passages and make you stop to read them again. The story is original and quirky and I enjoyed reading a book i've heard so much about but have never read up until now. Although it is ... Read More:

This was my first exposure to Ian Rankin and to the Rebus character. I am a big fan of P.D. James and these stories are on a par.
From the off both the storylines and the Rebus character are developed in an interesting and sustained way. Each book gets better and more complex, with very good continuing arcs and strands.
I have since bough just about all Rankin's other books and am enjoying them immensely.
Thoroughly recommended.

The book was very slow and lacked any element of supense. Wexford was solid as usual but the whole story had a very dated out-of-touch feel, in particular a set of characters who could have stepped out of the Fifties. Way too many characters as well. It was a challenge to recall who was who because the plot didn't grip me. The political correctness was extremely irritating and the female detective seemed to think more like a Seventies extreme feminist than a young contemporary woman. I'm not particularly talented at guessing solutions to murder but anyone would guess who and why in this story because from the first revealing reference it was painfully obvious. The conclusion had an unsatisfying off-scene feel to it as well. The Somali female mutilation theme had more life to it ... Read More:

I found this a fascinating sweep through some 2000 years of English (and most particularly London's) history.

Some reviewers have complained about Rutherfurd's rather static interpretation of Darwinism - i.e. very little genetic mutation/variation across a 2000 year history of the major 'families' in the book - however, its a very useful device to help weave the history of London together, using the framing device of a set of characters and their descendants to take us on the journey, and, because there are some quite big jumps in generations its helpful to be able to say 'oh, a red haired person - one of the Barnikels - aha! the white streak again - hello the Duckets and Doggetts etc. Some of his plotting devices may be a little obvious, but overall this was a splendid way to take the ... This book was amazing. I loved everything about it, how Anne Rice writes, how the characters develop and Louis is just so nice! For a vampire.
I had seen the movie before I read this book, but the movie is nothing compared to the book. You actually feel as if you are going through Louis life with him as its so detailed. I am now reading the sequel The Vampire Lestat, and would highly recomend that book also, as you will see why Lestat is the way he is in 'Interview'.
But would def read this again and recomend anyone to read this, not just vampire lovers.

18.To the Death by: Patrick Robinson

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : To the Death
With English not as my native language, but as reader of all of Robinson's books form first print, I think that, although it is still a pageturner and perfect beach reader, the characters start getting bored. The "always right" Arnold Morgan, the "I see everything in the World" Ramshawe, "mighty unfailable" Hunter, unfailable NSA ... What is the problem with good "other" men in the US of A..... And unfortunatly in the end, the only character ever discribed in to depth is out of the next book. Although I will certainly order this next book I hope Robinson comes with something new and a more surprising plot.

The language is as multi-layered and detailed as a Klimt, the imagery, rich and dense as Christmas cake - there's no doubt Midnight's Children is a unique and remarkable book, but I found, at it's core, it was too coldly detached. I never truly connected to Saleem or any of the characters, or the epic, grasshopper story. I was always slightly outside his world, looking in through closed blinds.

Some books - the books that live on in my mind long after - are the ones that embrace you, wrap you in a warm, soft blanket of themselves and draw you in completely and, awed though I was by the literary achievement (and it is an incredible tour de force, almost certainly deserving the over-used `genius' tag) I could never count it amongst my favourites.

It *is*a fantastical, magical, delight of a ... Read More:
