The Carpenter's Pencil is an amazing piece of writing. A friend of mine at work from Galicia recommended I read this writer. I am thankful she did!

Well, Rebus is back in this great book.

A Scottish MP is caught in a brothel, it all seems a fair cop at the start but it soon becomes apparent something is rather fishy. The papers have been tipped off about this and are onto the MP (Jack) like a flash.

This starts of a small plot of a group of scholl friends who have grown up and are a bit of a incestiouos.

The book started off slowley (for me anyways) but it starts hotting up and then its one of the best finishes to a Rankin book so far.

Books : Set In Darkness (Inspector Rebus)
I have read about 6 of the Rebus books and this is easily the the best of the lot. A huge array of characters all unique and identifiable, a complex plot with a stunning ending and as ever the stong sense of a location in time and space all add up a brilliant novel.

As others have said one of the great things about this book is the interaction between the characters I can't imagine any other 'genre' writer could handle such a large cast so well. Combine this with a strong plot which will hold your attention to the last page and you have an outstanding book.

196.The Black Book by: Ian Rankin

Books : The Black Book
I've read quite a few of the Rebus books over the years and am now trying to fill in all the gaps so have found myself reading some of the early books which I hadn't previously read. This is the fifth book in the series and seems to fall into a bit of a gap. It was written before the Rebus books became really famous but well after the character had been introduced.
The story is good but I found my attention lagging in the middle of the book. I know that Rebus always works better when he is suspended but it seems that he is suspended more than any other fictional policeman. Interesting that Siobhan's character was developed in more detail - lots more of her to come later.
OK book but have come to expect more than this from Ian Rankin.

I have read a few of anne rice's books and this is by far the worst. Like many of her books it is bogged down by over flowery prose describing artistic detail ad nauseum.
I felt nothing of the charactors pain, sorrow or happiness. This book left me feeling hollow. Avoid.
On the brightside it doesn't have quite as much gayness as other anne rice novels. clearly she thinks all men secretly fancy other men.

Life is short, and so is this book. I found it very readable because it paints life scenes with a few words, the essential ones. Relationship is the essence of our society and I believe this book has it quite close to the truth, amplified by the sometimes weird choices of tones.

199.Dead Souls by: Ian Rankin
September 22, 2005
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Books : Dead Souls
"Dead Souls" is perhaps one of the most accessible of Ian Rankin's "Rebus" novels. It has a three stranded plot; the suicide of a policeman linked to the activities of a group of paedophiles, the appearance of a newly released serial killer in Edinburgh and the disappearance of a teenage male related to an ex girlfriend of Rebus. Rebus gets enmeshed in all three of these plot lines and the result is an entertaining read with more incident than is usually found in this series of books.

I have been a fan of his previous books and also his books under the name of Alexander Kent. This book appears to be a series of notes. I failed completely to pick up any story line and very much doubt I will get to the end of it. It is a shame such a great writer appears to be losing it.
