Having read other readers' reviews (which I enjoy doing), it appears that this book has a very mixed bag reception. You either love it or hate it. I'm with the former camp. The book was beautifully written, tasteful and elaborative in its description and representation of the needs of a woman to totally and unconditionally submit. I also like the ancilliary characters of Jacqueline and Nathalie, two sisters who have differences of opinion to O's self-expression, in that one gets it and the other does not. It is a serious read that is indeed not for those who are easily shocked. Indeed, it must have been quite an eye opener when it was a contemporary piece of erotic literature. It covers not only flagellation and bondage, but also other ... Read More:

'Wide Sargasso Sea' is basically a prequel to Charlotte Bronte's 'Jane Eyre' which tells the madwoman in the attic's story. It goes back to the childhood of Bertha (here called Antoinette - the name Bertha is given to her patronisingly and domineeringly by Rochester). We see how she grew up as a Creole in the West Indies, her family's evolving situation and her eventual marriage to Rochester.
At this point in the story we switch for the most part to Rochester's point of view and for lovers of his character in 'Jane Eyre' this may be time to look away...or open up to this rather negative interpretation, at least. It's an interesting portrayal and even though you can't totally sympahtise with his behaviour in 'Wide Sargasso Sea', I think Rhys does ... Read More:

Let me just start with the silliest comment: the only way to find out whether you like this book or not, is by reading it. Most reviews here and on Amazon.com reflect ambivalent feelings. After turning the last page, mine was not altogether negative, but not entirely positive either. This was also my first book by Philip Roth.

Ageing but vigorous professor Coleman Silk is accused of racism in the classroom and forcefully rejecting it (in vain), he chooses to retire after a long, fulfilling and esteemed teaching career. His tale is told by his friend, writer Nathan Zuckerman. Hardly acknowledging each other for years, a friendship begins and Zuckerman tries to understand the multiple facets defining Silk's personality. Unbeknownst to him, ... Read More:

Other reviewers, even ones who got the fundamental point that this book is simply boring, still seem to say absurd things like how great the writing is and how complicated and intense the prose is and so on...

That this book is dull and tepid is clear. But what I wish to point out is how poorly written it is. We are bashed over the head again and again with exact and clear descriptions of the emotional, moral, spiritual and historical import of what is happening. Characters experience things in complete clarity and tell us all about it. Young children have the most amazing insight into what they experience and what it signifies. Pure tripe.

Roth makes the most elementary mistakes as an author, even as basic as constantly telling rather than ... Read More:

... so many people really rate this book. A thousand odd pages of stories tenuously linked by family bloodlines through the years. Nice idea, some interesting history but the stories are really quite bland and weak; probably because it is difficult to write about a region and its surroundings which basically is not that interesting.I gave up on this and the book has found its way to the charity shop. A very over rated book.

The combination of prose that is both sparse and flowing, a dense plot and a tragic yet oddly subtle denoument would be enough to make The Big Sleep one of the greatest, and most timeless of detective stories. But Chandler took the genre in this and subsequent novels to a literary level by an incisive, critical but above all, informed, portrayl of personal motivation and social setting. In doing so he not only wrote novels which had the greatest reality and integrity, but consequently broke the mould of inspector-calls-murder-at-the-vicarage stuff. Indeed the real tragedy for me is that his influence is not more keenly felt in crime writing, for unrealistic and repressed Christiesque dross is to this day being produced and eagerly consumed in quantity.

Ian Rankin was born in the Kingdom of Fife in 1960. His list of books is now into the thirties and this book is number seventeen in his enormously popular Rebus series. He lives with his wife and two sons in Edinburgh.

I have not read very many of Ian Rankin's novels, Inspector Rebus or otherwise. What I can say is that the two or three of his most recent novels that I have read have been extremely enjoyable. Exit Music set in Edinburgh is like a breath of fresh air after being fed a diet of American thrillers set in the smog filled streets of New York or San Francisco.

The book opens with DI Rebus winding down and attempting to tie up any loose ends before his impending retirement, but then a murder takes place and retirement for Rebus seems just ... Read More:

Ian Rankin tells a right good yarn! Although he admits to having never set foot inside a Police Station and therefore some of his procedural stuff is offside, his central character, DI John Rebus gives Rankin the vehicle to explore different emotions and morals. Each of the three novels in this compendium, has Edinburgh and its criminal underbelly at the core but with a different moral twist as seen through the eyes of that dedicated, work centred, CID cop.
Well worth a visit and with this series, well worth packing into your suitcase for the holidays!

I really liked this book, the pictures are great quality and being able to see Vetrianos studies was interesting. However as another reviewer said you don't actually get to see or read much about how the artist works other than some brief talk of music and inspiration, even with these small flaws it's still a book worth reading and one I come back to often for inspiration myself.
