Philip Roth, in this first of the Nathan Zuckerman novels, published in 1979, introduces Nathan as a twenty-three-year-old graduate of the University of Chicago who has had four short stories published and is looking for a mentor. Having contacted famed writer E. I. Lonoff, a writer living in rural New England with his wife of 35 years, he has accepted Lonfof's invitation to visit, but a snowstorm arises and Zuckerman finds himself spending the night with Lonoff and his wife. His observations about the life of Lonoff leads him imagine many stories--about Lonoff's past, his possible relationship with a young former student, and about his life in the countryside. In addition, he also reminisces about his own past, his relationships with his family, ... Read More:

I used this as part of a module at University. The book is divided into useful chapters which allow the ease of use of this book. The writing is clear and effective and the writers are clever and though-provoking. However, if you are not so widely-read as the authors, you might have trouble following their lines of argument at times.

All in all, a good academic text.

76.Knots And Crosses by: Ian Rankin

Books : Knots And Crosses
The fact that I read this, binge-fashion, in one afternoon speaks volumes about its prowess as a page-turner. That said, I was glad I'd read other reviews warning me that this, the first Rebus,is far from the best and that a patient reader is rewarded by starting here at the beginning, but waiting for the good stuff a few books in. Because although it did the business as a bit of a 'gripper' there were a few large-ish holes that could be punched through it, and the ending, though solid, felt a bit rushed. It's interesting to read Rankin's own introduction, where he himself indicates that Knots and Crosses has flaws that he's rather embarassed about now. So good, very good, and I'm looking forward to better still as I work my way through.

After reading the first four books of the vampire chronicles, Memnoch the devil is a pretty big disappointment. The first few chapters are promising and quite a good read but now i'm forcing myself to read it to the end, whereas, usually i can't put her novels down. It is way too theological, and seems to lose the vampire plot completely, i don't really see where it ties in.
It is well written, of course, and still has the emotion and atmosphere of an Anne Rice novel but is a bit tedious and hard to follow at times.
I would say read it if you plan on reading The Vampire Armand, if not i wouldn't bother (i'm 19, atheist and have not yet finished the book)

I love Anne Rice's writing i just think she ran away with the idea a bit or maybe its not ... Read More:

For all that I have a history degree and have studied various periods and aspects of history quite extensively, I have always struggled to get a clear understanding of which Irish hero or villain did what. Whom exactly was Cromwell fighting against when he paid his historic visit in the early 1650s? What was Wolfe Tone, a man now honoured by a statue at one corner of St Stephens Green, actually fighting for? Which of the many battles were sectarian, which for the whole of Ireland? Etc.

A friend recommended Rutherfurd's Ireland Awakening, and I am writing this review to say that his recommendation was spot on. As soon as I had finished reading the book I passed it on to my wife. She went further than me, in that as soon as she had read it she ordered Dublin, ... Read More:
