I am not sure what to think of this book. It being written by Ruth Rendell, I expected a mystery, but it really is more of a story about relationships. There is a mystery, but it is secondary and no detective is brought in to solve it. The main focus is on the sisters Ismay and Heather and their interactions with each other, their significant others and their immediate family. Throughout the book, I felt that there was something missing, something that makes the story worthwhile.

Second in the In the Garden series follows the well trodden Nora Roberts paranormal formula; a trio of strong female leads who manage quite nicely on their own, thank you, but meet their equal in a man whilst avoiding danger. Black Rose is the most interesting of the series, despite the fact that Roz (Rosalind Harper) and Mitch, the geneologist she hires to track the Harper Bride's past, are the oldest members of the group.

Roz is very likeable and cares deeply for her grown up boys, because of this the ghost who haunts her ancestral home has always been kind to her, singing her children to sleep with lullabies. Now that Roz faces falling in love again the Harper Bride becomes angry and vengeful. More of the mystery is revealed in this one ... Read More:

That's all I want to say really. It is a perfect text to use in secondary school Drama, but try showing the original play, legally, to a class.

BRING OUT THE DVD! Otherwise there may have to be a Drama Teachers' mass demonstration. And you KNOW that's going to include some pretty ugly use of vocal warm-ups .

the only reason that i did not enjoy reading this book is because its very different to the current script of the musical blood brothers, there is and alternative ending in this book and only features the lyrics to one song: (marilyn monroe) the book is quite shot and misses a great deal out om the present day perfomance of blood brothers, do not buy if you are wanting to experience the laughter and great lines from the current outstanding performance of blood brothers.

I bought this on the back of the frankly stunningly good amazon reviews. On the positive side it is a thoroughly enjoyable romp with some entertaining characters and interestingly presented ideas. On the downside it isn't, IMHO the masterpiece some deem it to be.

If you are looking for a book to read on holiday, or on a long journey, I would definitely recommend this book to pass the time. If you are looking for a masterpiece to illuminate the human condition sadly this book isn't it. The characters are too two dimensional, the style too self conciously quirky and the philosphy a disturbing mixture of new age nonsense and Reaganistic individulalism.

The story is that of Alobar and Kudra, ancients who wish to live for ever, of the ... Read More:

After having read the mere 176-page original gothic tale of 1764, Horace Walpole's "The Castle of Otranto", I embarked on this 672-page equally-famous gothic fantasy by Ann Radcliffe, published thirty years later, and a best-selling literary phenomenon of its day.

The opening of Terry Castle's incisive introduction to the work notes that, "Perhaps no work in the history of English fiction has been more often caricatured." It is supposed to be "the greatest (or at least the most famous) of gothic romances ... has an archetypal `gothic villain' ... is loaded with exotic scenery ... [and] its heroine, a victim of `sensibility', faints a lot." But whilst common opinion may see it as "a bit of a `silly' book too", the conscientious reader must actually ... Read More:

She's not!!! I, again enjoyed this novel, though I'll admit it wasn't one of her best and not in my Top Ten. I was able to guess who the bad guy was from the first time he was introduced. There highlight within the storyline and I would have liked the finale to have lasted a little longer, with a little more action rather than the book long lead up. It is a good read but not the best ^_^

88.The Naming Of The Dead by: Ian Rankin

Books : The Naming Of The Dead
How you rate this Inspector Rebus story may depend to some extent on what you think of the solution to the mystery, which is obviously something a reviewer ought not to give away. On the other hand it will take you nearly 500 very enjoyable pages before you get there. So far as this reader is concerned, there is nothing much wrong with the solution. I can't persuade myself that it is the job of a detective story to turn out like a factual police investigation in real life, and although the outcome should not be preposterous it ought to be imaginative, and it is imaginative here.

I have no idea whether Ian Rankin belongs to the Agatha Christie school of whodunit plotting, or to the Raymond Chandler school. We know from Chandler himself that he wrote most of his Marlowe ... Read More:

I found a very short excerpt of this screenplay in an old GCSE exam paper, at a writing class I was attending, and there were tears of laughter streaming down my face.
Pure gold. Five stars. No problem.

It was nice seeing Seth again, the last of the adopted Quinn brothers. We find him in this stage of life being a celebrated artist, and after doing the grand tour of Europe, he comes back to home and hearth in Chesapeake. Of course, being Ms. Roberts, things aren't so simple, his Mother is on his tail, and he's gotten romantically involved with the prickly business owner of the local flower shop, Drucilla.

Yes, the romance between Drucilla and himself is vintage Nora Roberts. There are the shocks of lust and the tremors of need before the inevitable. The romance was all of sweet and tart at once, but that wasn't the best part of the story.

The best part of the story was seeing Seth and his grown up relationship with his brothers. The bond between Cameron and himself ... Read More:
