Books : The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood among Ghosts: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts
This book is about the growth of a Chinese girl in America, whose development from girlhood to womanhood is shaped by the stories and voices of her female forebears -- her mother, aunts, and historical and legendary Chinese figures such as Fa Mu Lan and Ts'ai Yen (anyone who's familiar with the original Fa Mu Lan story might find Kingston's version confusing though). The book is no ordinary autobiography as Kingston imaginatively mixes autobiographical details with fictional and imaginative elements to portray her unique experience of growing up as a Chinese American girl/woman. The writer's intention to articulate a voice amid a double-marginalised situation (both racially and sexually) is evident and the book is an essential read for anyone ... Read More:

This comprehensive encyclopedia contains hundreds of entries (from Abracadabra to the Zagarramurdi Witches) and over a hundred illustrations. Explaining its nature as a holistic religion that emphasizes the sanctity of life and the unity of all things, it provides a survey of witchcraft from its early pagan roots to the present, including the periods of persecution like the Inquisition and the Salem witch trials. Included are biographical profiles of leading modern witches, many with interviews. Some prominent personalities include Patricia Crowther, Laurie Cabot and Margaret Adler and there is also an interesting piece on Carl Weschke, the magician and founder of Llewellyn Publications.

An Excellent Literary Companion & Biography, 11. Februar 2008

John Saul has been one of my favorite authors since I was a child. His spine tinglers are set in sleepy towns near major cities (e.g. Eastbury in THE GOD PROJECT and HELLFIRE which is a fictional suburb of Boston) where weird and shadowy things take place. His characters often appear virtuous, yet have a shadow side. He is at no loss for presenting macabre scenes in a plausible way, which makes the story in question all the more delightfully frightening.

Saul is different from Stephen King whereas King's stories, while scary are plainly works of fiction and the reader is aware of that at all times. Saul's spine tinglers on the ... Read More:

155.The Stephen King Universe by: Stanley Wiater, Christopher Golden

Expected such a lot more from this book, i knew there were links between kings books, so bought this for fun to find all the links.
While some links told about are good and inciteful, there are a lot more that are just stupid. For instance this book relates a character in insomnia to king arthur as lancelot is mentioned.
The book is 3/4 about what each character does and what each story is about, most people buying this book will have read the stories so what is the point of going in depth about what the storys are.
Overall a few good points but then loads and loads of nonsence. Dont bother!

This book is a gold mine of information. The author demonstrates his vast knowledge on this well researched book. With information from all philosophies, cultures and ideas; from both western and eastern paths. It is definitely an encyclopaedic reference, it does not go into any great detail but provides the main ideas and gives numerous sources to go for further information. It remains very insightful. At the beginning is included a refreshingly broad and serious look at what magic is. This book would be very useful to advanced magicians and scholars alike, and would provide someone new to the topic with inspiring ideas. Not written with any obvious bias, and not one of those "new age" obsessed books either.

I would hardly call this book complete, and see more than a few omissions, perhaps intentional, but not at all logical. The first error, and this has to be the one that irks me the most, is Jones's failure to give entries to the first two Evil Dead movies. He has an entry for Army of Darkness, in which he merely mentions the Evil Dead movies.

The second oversight that confuses me is his lack of recognition for all of the Demons movies that Lamberto Bava did, and only mentioning Demons 5. The first of the Demons series Lamberto did was simply entitled Demons, and was far more worthy of reference then the 5th installment in the sequence. Why he didn't put his effort into Mario Bava eludes me. He obviously thought his directing ... Read More:
