I don't know who wrote the product description for this book - but its got a glaring error in it. As any "Charmed" fan will know, the witches were "Prue (Prudence)", Piper and Phoebe, followed by Paige after Prue's death. Where amazon got "Persephone" from is anyone's guess!!!! I also noted the complaints that all the book contains is spells/charms - its meant to be the Charmed Book of Shadows - why are they expecting a book about the series/pictures etc?

From the outset this book was not going to reveal something that was not already well known, but that does not matter as the author gives a light tickle to the subject. I think anyone wanting a basic grounding in this subject would not go far wrong with this book, which is an easy read, and I like that about a book.

I originally ordered this book of amazon believing it to be the original Charles Dickens, unabridged and unmessed with. Unfortunately its not, its a simplified 'Beginners' version for children. As I have still not read the proper adult version I can't comment on the story, but if your wanting a childrens version this is well presented and cheap, if you don't want a kids version AVOID.

I warmly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for some theoretical insight into the horror genre. I did my Master's thesis on supernatural horror in literature and film and this is by far the best book I have found on the subject. Carroll's unobtrusive style and genuine interest in popular culture make his book a very pleasant read, yet I have found The Philosophy of Horror to be much superior to the writings of Freud, Todorov, or Kristeva on related topics. A must.

I warmly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for some theoretical insight into the horror genre. I did my Master's thesis on supernatural horror in literature and film and this is by far the best book I have found on the subject. Carroll's unobtrusive style and genuine interest in popular culture make his book a very pleasant read, yet I have found The Philosophy of Horror to be much superior to the writings of Freud, Todorov, or Kristeva on related topics. A must.

The Farrars are well-known writers on Wiccan practice, and it is really for Wiccans that this book seems to have been written. Several goddesses are described in detail, and their worship through history explained, and for each a ritual is provided. These rituals all require a coven, but still make interesting reading for a solitary practitioner. This book also contains a directory of many goddesses of the world, and the first section provides a fascinating account of the changing attitudes to goddesses through history. Whilst the historical accuracy of this book can be debated, it is still invaluable as a reference that describes many goddesses from many different pantheons.
