Books : Weird Creatures Encyclopedia (Collins Voyager)
I bought this book after my two boys had demanded it having read and loved the Alien Encyclopedia by the same author. This is a classic - if you want your kids to get to know about the weird and wonderful stuff of legends and folklore as well as monsters and weird creatures from films, TV, and novels - then this is for you!

The writing is witty and great fun. The illustrations are excellent. The research for this must have taken ages! There's a great quiz at the end which the boys took great delight in beating me at.

It's a treat for any junior monster fan or any adult reader of the Fortean Times.

From its first publication in 1979, Margot Adler's 'Drawing Down the Moon' has proven to be one of the most significant and influential books on the modern revival of Paganism. Its reputation is well deserved. This is a work of shining intelligence and lucidity which covers a great deal of ground. DDtM is equally useful both to Pagans and those others in the wider society who are trying to understand one of the fastest growing and potentially transformative religious movements in the Western world. Although a well-connected figure within the Pagan community, Adler's commitment has in no way impaired her powers of observation and analysis. And while drawing primarily on her researches in the United States, the book remains of considerable value ... Read More:

47.Witch Hunt: History of a Persecution: The History of Persecution by: Nigel Cawthorne

Books : Witch Hunt: History of a Persecution: The History of Persecution
The writer begins this book by stating that is it not a revisionist history seeking to offer a modern explanation of the events it describes. It is simply a country-by-country account of witch trials roughly spanning the 15th-18th centuries, told directly through trial 'reports', prison letters of the accused, and contemporary accounts of the many thousands of accusations, tortures and executions.

As such, it is more a sourcebook rather than a detailed exploration of the subject. If you want to know exactly how many people were tortured and executed in different European countries between the above dates, or harbour a fascination for the particular methods of torture used to elicit confessions (some of them absolutely gut-wrenching), ... 'Mastering Witchcraft' is NOT about Wicca, if you want a book on "the Goddess" or "the God" and harm none etc. go look elsewhere you won't find that religious fluff here. This is one mans form of somewhat ceremonial Witchcraft.

This book has been on and off my wish list for months now. I kept hearing contradicting accounts of its worth and value but I finally bit the bullet and decided to see for myself what all the fuss was about!

I'm extremely glad I read this book as it's a refreshingly non-dogmatic. There's talk of cursing, seduction via magic, manipulative spells etc. all very interesting and more along the lines of a left-hand path. I actually liked that Huson did not tell the reader to not do such and such like most writers, ... Read More:

Okay, first things first; this book IS expensive. Very expensive in fact. However, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that it's worth every single penny.
It truly is one of the best reference materials for H.P. Lovecraft. It offers information on his family, friends, letters, employment history as well as providing a synopsis of most of his works. Clearly, a massive amount of research has been carried out in the writing of this book and it shows. The gigantic amount of information featured inside truly is of huge interest to anyone even vaguely interested in the life and writings of Lovecraft.
If you're looking for an invaluable resource on the man, and his work then buy this book. You will not be disappointed by what it has to offer. Highly recommended.
