The pictures are just awful on the whole. A few are ok, but some are so bad I just don't want them staring at me. Given the number of photos lonely planet must have, I don't know what the production team for this calendar were thinking. Decent size calendar but that's as far as it goes.

I cannot emphasise enough how well this book sets out the basics of DSLR photography. I am on my first DSLR and to be honest knew nothing about aperture, shutter speed and ISO and how the 3 interelate. This book sets these out so clearly that the layman can understand. Been wondering how/when to use the P, M, A or S buttons on your camera ?, This explains it perfectly, and gives nice glossy examples of a scene when you would use f/4 vs f/22. I also have the David Busch book to "replace" the manual, but this far exceeds what you can learn from that. Both good books in their own right.

As usual this guide makes compulsive reading, if you're interested in good food. For the last two years there's been a greater use of colour printing and the whole appearance of the book is more attractive. It's inevitably weighted towards more populated areas with very few entries for far-flung places, where in truth one needs guidance even more. The Guide is limited by he fact that it is alerted to good places by recommendations from the general public to which it then sends inspectors. So, for example, an excellent eating place in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland will have a lesser chance of inclusion if a volunteer inspector is unavailable to travel and stay there (at their own expense) to do the inspection--most inspectors only get the meal reimbursed. ... Just received this latest edition of the long running 'Top 10 of Everything' series, and as always its nicely produced, laid out and thoroughly researched. There is a good 'now and then' comparison feature, in which 2008 is compared with 1988 to see how our world is changing and evolving. For example 20 years ago no countries average life expectancy hit the 80 year mark. Now ALL the top 10 do. The facts and figures are immense, and Ash's work is as exhaustive as ever. Every few pages you are left with a 'Wow! I never knew that' moment. HOWEVER I must criticise the publishers and general retailers with this series. This globe certainly is a fantastic idea. My seven year old was desparate for a globe for christmas, and this seemed the ideal choice as we would all be able to play with it together over the holiday. How dissapointing then when he opened it on Christmas morning and discovered that it was convinced that most of the northern hemisphere was the artic ocean! We are sendning it back (to Santa) for one more go.
