In Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain, Maryanne Wolf, an expert on the reading brain, describes how our brains manage to read. Reading is not an innate activity, but it is an invention, and only a few thousand years old at that. It does not come naturally to humans in the way that walking or eating does and on the first page of this book, we learn that it is only because of the remarkable "plasticity" of our brains that we are able to achieve an understanding of the written word.

The book is divided into three parts. Firstly the history of how humans learned to read, secondly how reading is learned and how it develops, and thirdly what happens when in cases like dyslexia, something goes wrong in ... Read More:

As and when you need to cheat at crosswords, Anne Bradford's "string and sealing wax" book (produced without a computer) still stands up very well against the ones produced mainly with the help of computers (most if not all of the rest). On a crossword discussion forum, Bradford's was recently compared with Chambers Crossword Dictionary by looking up the theme-words in the epic Listener 4000 puzzle. Bradford's had 19 of the 24 theme-words (8 each of battles, composers and coins), Chambers had just 13.

I have for many years been what the author calls a "stickler", i.e. someone who exercises total pedantry where punctuation is concerned. Her book has, therefore, given me the utmost pleasure: whilst reading it I nodded and smiled my agreement at just about every paragraph. In addition, Ms Truss's humour made me laugh out loud on occasion (much to my embarrassment and to the consternation of people around me who observed that I was merely reading about what they saw as boring old punctuation). This book must surely amuse and delight all those "sticklers" who flinch (or worse) when they encounter errors of punctuation (sadly, not just by greengrocers) and should be compulsory reading for all office workers (including the bosses, who dictate commas ... This book is a delight. Refreshing, informative and full of entertaining and interesting quotations. If I was Cary Grant attempting to entertain Audrey Hepburn, after reading this book I would have no inhibitions. It is almost like Dorothy Parker having a drink with Joan Rivers at the Dorchester but without the venom. A book to read before you fall asleep! It is never dull, and a great read on a ski lift.

My son needed something more than his picture dictionary, but not so large he lost interest in looking a word up - and this is perfect.

The only down side is the size (A5) and being a hardback, it is a little heavy for carrying around on a daily basis.

I have been very keen to teach my son the letters of the alphabet but wanted to do it the right way. Having visited his school he will be attending next year, they do follow the Jolly phonics scheme and therefore these books have been great along with the work books. It's given me the confidence to teach and he has enjoyed the colourful pictures and tracing with his finger the letters. We are now moving on to book three after he has managed to read and write the letters in books one and two. Being a working parent and mum to a one year old aswell we are only able to do learning for an hour on a friday so these short to the point books are great. My husband also helps by going over a book for 5 mins at bedtime before reading a short story. It certainly has ... Read More:
