Might seem a bit contradictory, but this is not at all a page-turner in the normal sense of rapid movement and action - the detail is far too deep, dark and dense for that. And indeed that is exactly what keeps you turning the pages - the dour, opressive, stifling atmosphere of Stalin's Russia. It seeps into every corner of the main character's, Leo's, life, and that of his parents and wife Raisa. It tinges every single decision they make - what job he takes so that his parents get a decent apartment, and indeed it becomes part of Raisa's attraction to him. One of fear and becoming part of the system rather than left outside it. These are the most compelling parts of the book - Raisa's taut relationship with her husband, and indeed whether he turns ... While working for a previous company, I was sent on this course (which included reading the book). I'm sure the company meant well, but my experience of the "7 Habits of Highly Effective People", was essentially teaching people how to suck eggs.

Stephen R. Covey has made a personal fortune out of selling what most critical thinkers realise for themselves at an early age. His writings are bland and uninteresting, telling us what we already know in a language barely recognisable as English. "Synergize", "leverage", "win-win"; I'm sure you've heard them before. They are all here. Do they mean anything? In my humble opinion - not in the slightest.

Steer clear.

I can see why the MOD wanted to ban this book. Dan Mills give a very gungho/right-on account of the battle for the city but if you read between the lines there are lots of unanswered questions. He never questions his own decisions and only occasionally questions those of his superiors.
Why did he roll up right outside the main enemy HQ on the first day? Supposedly no-one had told him.....after he had been given a 1 hour briefing by the guy he was taking over from. Why didnt he ask the CIMIC people who had been working there for months and continued to work with them throughout?
Was increasing the barricading to the building the moment they got there really their right message to the locals, again the CIMIC staff did warn them?
Why did the ... Read More:

I don't care to get into the controversy over whether or not this is part of this food movement or whether it sends the right message... all I wanted to know when I read it was whether Delia presented simple, day-to-day recipes that I could use when I was in a hurry and wanted something nice for the family.

Totally disappointed. Why? -- very simple: I do not need to spend money on a book to tell me to read the back of the packet of pre-packaged foods in the supermarket.

I don't have anything against the occassional use of a ready meal or a frozen ingredient, but why would I want to spend money for a batch of recipes that basically tell me nothing more than the information on the packaging tells me: open, pour, stir in a can of...

The fourth and newest book in the Roy Grace series by Peter James introduces the reader first to Ronnie Wilson, a Brit visiting the US and New York City to try to enlist financial assistance for his latest money-making venture, one hopefully not doomed to failure as were his past endeavors. His business meeting, after which he plans to fly back to the UK, is scheduled for 9 AM in the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11, 2001.

We next, in October of 2007, meet Abby Dawson, a 27-year-old woman who has just returned from Australia to her native England, and whose background is somewhat shadowy, as we are told she has done everything she can think of to disguise her identity, describing herself as a `fugitive.'

And then Detective Superintendent ... Read More:

I ordered this book on the strength of the earlier reviews saying how good it was. I personally found the book very simplistic and unhelpful. All it seems to say is 'Just go out and do whatever worries you' and also had a very unhelpful message to people who may have low self esteem that if things worry you then basically thats your fault. If your job worries you change it, if your partner worries you... well change them... hey if your house worries you, change it... life is not as easy as that. Lets change everything shall we? A very unrealistic book....

One of my resolutions for 2008 is to broaden my literary horizens. After studying English Lit to A-Level, my interest has fallen to the wayside. So on my quest to better myself through literature, I read "The Old Man and the Sea", which I just couldn't relate to. So imagine my relief when I started reading "The Great Gatsby". I'm so glad I perservered with classic books!

TGG is a great read. It's fast-paced from the outset, and gripping towards the end - I couldn't put it down. I even tried to convince family and friends to read it afterwards; but to no avail - so if I manage to get even ONE person to read it from writing this review, then good! Definitely recommended.

Its amazing this book was wrote in the forties. Its very modern and alot of what George Orwell wrote come true, very worrying. Maybe not his best work, still a classic though. Sixty years later and 1984 is still going strong. He has, in my opinion wrote better books but I would definitely recommend this book. Orwell's last masterpiece.

To be honest, I don't think this book needs another review, as much of what makes this title great has already been expressed on here. Work is quiet, however, and so it is too hard not to say something about a book I so thoroughly enjoyed.

As many people have said, Brown's writing style is very entertaining, lines such as "read on you clever sausage, you," give it the light-hearted tone that makes it such an easy read. Obviously, any one who picks up this book will be doing so because they are curious about Brown's techniques, and I really felt that the content did not disappoint in the slightest. Near the start of the book, Brown gives a discourse in the powers of misdirection as he goes through a vanishing coin trick. The general premise is: You do one thing and this provokes a ...
