This book takes place in the beggining of the 1900s. It is ideal for those who like rich English family novels full of intrigues. The book is told on first person by the servant of the house that is now on her late 90s. Thus, the author keeps going back and fowards in time. During her years as a servant, a man kills himself and the only witnesses are two sisters, who after that will never talk to each other again. The story unravells the mystery.
the only aspect I didn't like of this book is that the author keeps on revealling what will happen before it actually does. In spite of this, the ending still came as a total surprise to me.

This book is simply a collection of amusing quotations from the famous - and the not so famous. It doesn't really appear to have anything more to do with QI than having the series name on the cover. It's a great book for dipping into but hardly something you'll want to tirelessly read from cover to cover. Ideal as a bathroom reader or to amuse others with.

I found this book captivating, in a "gallows humor" sort of way.

Although written many years ago, and recounting events in the distant past, it should be required reading for anyone in the markets today. More specifically, it should have been required reading a year ago (mid 2007) for those invested in finance and property sectors.

Whether the malaise in those sectors (some stocks down 90%) spreads eventually to the general indexes remains to be seen.

I read this novel with greater speed than usual, because I just so wanted something good to happen to Lewis - I was frightened for him! The novel starts by reminding us that in 1945 most young children hardly knew their fathers as they had been brought up by their mothers whilst the men were at war. Suddenly there's a man in the house and the dynamics of daily life changed dramatically for 7-year-old Lewis. Three years later, the centre of his life was gone and in the 1940/50's bereavemnt counsellors didn't exist, so how was this child expected to come to terms with his loss? Love from others, you would think, but his father shuts him out emotionally and five months later introduces him to his new 'mother'. This was middle-class life in the 50's - when keeping ... This perfect for very young babies. To an adult eye (or any child over maybe 6 months) it's something and nothing. BUT, let your baby decide. You'll see it's so very well suited to him/her. Six pages of simple faces or patterns that mesmerise very young babies. We used ours with our daughter from aged 4 weeks. We would just have it open were she could see it and she'd become calm and transfixed. The contrasts delight little babies. A fabulous value for money first book for the very small.

I've owned this book since my first year of nurse training in 1998. Ten years later and having been qualified for 7 years, it's still in regular use. I recently did my Acute Care Foundation Course for emergency nursing, and out it came yet again. It's easy to understand and logical. Each body system is covered separately, starting with the biology theory and moving on to talk about diseases which can affect that particular system. For anyone who wants to learn about human biology who doesn't like jargon and wants things explained to them in plain English, this book is essential.

Wow. Amazing book! I am still recovering from this book which cliff has written from the bottom of his heart. Thank you cliff for giving us an insight into your personality. For fans, it is a 'must' read, as we get to know so many intimate details like what he has for breakfast, his fears, his love and above all his frank approach to life and controversies which surround him. He not only clears the dust but also confirms what all his fans already know about him...that he is such a humble person, inspite of having millions of fans worldwide, especially here in India. My only regret was there were no contact details about his fan clubs nor an address we could write to, which could have been included in this super book.

This is an outstanding book to have in any executive library. It covers so much more than most other books, and I'd go so much as to say it is a must have / read for anyone studying management, or is on an MBA program, or is going into an executive post.

Well writen, covers topics clear and succinctly.

Money well spent.

Well, that's how we call it in our department as we always go back into this textbook whenever we need some guidance in our studies. It is the most useful textbook next to the Penguin Dictionary of IR. Recommended buy for all International Relations students out there.
