Beautifully written, accurately researched and giving enough space to describing how individual sites fitted into the larger picture of southern Gaul. During four years living near Colonia Nemausus in the shadow of the Pont du Gard, this book never left my side and needs replacing.

Bought this guide book because we went to Rome for a weekend trip and it was excellent. I've been to a lot of places and have a lot of guide books but this was the best. It gives a lot of extra information and nice things to know. Furthermore it just reads like a novel. The best thing however is that everything was tried by the author or a member of her team, so all the discriptions (esp. the restaurants and shopping) are spot on. It's only a shame the purple guides are only available for some italian cities because I would love to have one about Paris where I live at the moment.

Plenty of helpful information, particularly the restaurant recommendations - complete life and budget saver! Maps were sufficiently detailed, so no need to buy extras. My book is extremely well-thumbed. Would definitely recommend this book above others.

Books : Rome (Blue Guides)
The Blue Guide to Rome is a good guide to the history and architecture of the Eternal City. It contains practical advice as well as what the Blue Guides are known for: complete and detailed information on the history and content of places of interest. This information is often too detailed for just dipping into, but is still interesting. The map of Rome at the back is good too. The only big drawback is that there are no photographs - only occasional sketches.
