Helpful pointers to the quieter bars and restaurants (as well as the obvious ones that you can't miss) and little places like Bottom Bay that would be easy to sail/drive straight past. Not enough on where to stay when the cricket is on and everywhere is full !

I'm in the process of planning a trip to the Languedoc and I've been reading several guides to the region. This is not a terrible guide, but it's the one I liked the least. This book would be good if you already know exactly where you want to go and what you want to do. For example, there is plenty of specific information on things like opening hours and places to stay. It's very well researched. But if you're earlier in the planning stages than that, it doesn't really do it. The chapters leap about from place to place and it gets confusing trying to work out where they are in relation to one another. Moreover, nowhere sounds particularly enticing! I'm planning to walk over the Pyrenees from Catalonia to the Midi this summer, and was looking for a good resource to give me a well-informed idea of possible starting points, finishes, distances and the natural obstacles involved. Although the Rough Guide was slagged off somewhat by previous reviewers for being a) too big to be properly useful as a hiking guide, and b) too useful specifically for hikers (there's no pleasing some people!), I'm glad to say that it's perfect for me - I'm not going to take it on the trip, but I'll be siphoning every little bit of information from it while planning. This guide was ok and I read it before departing to south america, where I went to Peru, Chile and Boliva and it provided some good information but it wasn't as detailed as the footprint guide, which is the one we ended up taking. If you are visiting one main country in South America it's best to get a specific guide for that country. Generally useful to help you decide which countries you want to visit but not very in depth.

This is quite simply the best guide to Budapest you can get, though as always it is in need of updating. I've just come back from a short break in Budapest and thus book was my constant companion. I found it helpful and easy to follow. The descriptions of the sights and attractions are well-written and informative. There was nothing to criticise in the content, except that Budapest is a more expensive place than it was when this edition was published, with most galleries that are described as free now charging a substantial entrance price.
