I've owned a 1st edition copy of The Golden Boy's book for many years and it has a prominent place in my collection. Lewis very kindly signed it for me (via Derek Hallas - yet another great Leeds Loiner) a few months ago. His account of the move from Union to League is a fascinating incite into how sports (RL) team management worked in the fifties. But for me the best section of the book is the full details of the 1957 RL Cup campaign with the pinnicle being the 9-7 win in the Final against Barrow. I was an 11 year old schoolboy in those days and I was taken to London for the first time by my school (Quarry Mount) by train for the Final on the 11th of May 1957. Those 1957 season memories of Lewis's record 496 points scoring season will live ... Read More:

(from my amazon.com review)

It's too bad that few books on team sports can measure up to this one. Thirty Bullies covers the Rugby World Cups of 1987, '91, '95, '99, and 2003 (it was written a bit too early for the 2007 World Cup). The title comes from an Oscar Wilde quote: "Rugby is a good occasion for keeping thirty bullies far from the centre of the city". You'll certainly find here that rugby--"A game for hooligans played by gentlemen"--is not always played by gentlemen indeed! There's a finely-done deep analysis of each of the World Cups, and the likely reasons why the champion indeed won. You'll read about the exciting matches and the blowouts--Georgia, who were hopeful of winning all their matches, lost to England ... Read More:

I have a colleague in work who has played against JPR (when JPR played flanker for Tondu 3rds) and considers him to be the most arrogant of men. While this arrogance did not come across in the book so explicitly, if the book has a shortcoming it is that it focuses exclusively on its subject and as a result ignores much of the context in which the action happens and indeed many of the other participants in that action. In doing so, it somehow manages to belittle rather than glorify the achievements of the great Welsh teams of the 1970's as the narrative is so strong and focused that it plays and reads with tunnel vision. This is a great pity as a wider context would not only enhance the narrative but add to the chapters detailing JPR's view of ... Read More:

130.The Autobiography by: Martin Johnson

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Autobiography
.....but I'm afraid you will be disappointed. He tells us practically nothing about himself and what he does tell we already know. The book reads like a chronology of events rather than the inner thoughts of a sporting hero. But what do you expect from the silent man mountain? Austin Healy, although not in the same league as a rugby legend, did produce a far more enjoyable and revealing account of life as a rugby star.
