I bought this book recently after Wales had won their tenth Grand Slam, as I thought it would be interesting to read the thoughts of the captain of the 9th Slam winners from 2005. I found it very hard to put the book down, and read it in just over a week. Of course I already knew of Alfie's claim as one of the true Welsh rugby greats, with 100 caps, 40 tries, and captain of the first Welsh side since the 70's to both win the Slam, and beat the Aussies. What I had not realised was what an emotional, proud and passionate Welshman he is. He wears his heart on his sleeve and this book is a lovingly told story about a wild young athlete from Pen Coed in Bridgend, who originally cares only for himself but who with the help of mentors like Steve Hansen, ... Jason Leonard is the World's most capped Rugby Union player, despite playing in one of the games' toughest positions.
His autobigraphy should be a fascinating look at a game that has changed dramatically throughout his lengthy and distinguished career. Certainly Jason comes across as a dedicated player and decent family man. However the book is poorly edited.
There is repetition (e.g. his partner is thanked twice in the acknowledgements; the first chapter mentions his '4 World Cups and 3 Lions tours' in consecutive pages) and lack of detail ('Matt Dawson and Austin Healey were wrong to have written what they did' - yes, but Jason doesn't say what they actually wrote; 'Austin Healey got much grief from his advertising campaign...if you've seen ... What a truelly remarkable book this is, having finished reading Dallaglio's recent book(and thoroughly enjoying it) i scouted about for books by my other England rugby heros and came across this. Jason write's in an easy-read style and is very honest about his life, up-bringing and faith, which i found intriguing. A must-read, would recomend to anyone.

He's dedicated to his sport, hates publicity and is very down to earth. Compared to other autobiographies, this book is not as interesting. But, then again, he's still very young and hopefully there will be a few more chapters about his future success.

If you are really into Rugby, I suppose you will love this book, but if Rugby is just a mild interest, it will not be as good as read as I hoped it would be. Saying that, it will demonstrat the dedication and focus you need to reach the top. So, for aspiring Rugby players, buy it!
