Jill Murphy wrote this book at the age of 18 and five publishers (adults of course) rejected it saying it was boring. So, she put it away for six whole years! Now children love it and it is very popular, so, she was right and they were wrong! This is now called a modern classic and I love her books about the worst witch - Mildred Hubble! Jill Murphy did not only write it but she illustrated it as well! She started making books, writing stories and doing drawings to match, at the age of six, (she did actually staple it)! Here is a bit about the story: Mildred Hubble is a new pupil at Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches and she was not getting on very well - especially because she had Ethel, the teacher's pet, miss perfect and little miss goody ... They will meet new companions along the way: Lelldorin the rash Arendish archer, Mandorallen the bold Arendish knight, and Ce' Nedra the spoilt red-haired Tolnedran princess.

All the while, various enemies such as Murgos, Grolim priests ... Read More:

First of all I have to say that I love Discworld. I knew Nation was not a Discworld book, but it's a Prachett book and I thought it was worth a try.
And I was right. This is not Discwold, and, after reading it I wonder why does Pratchett lose his time writin Discworld when he can create such a wonderful book...
It's a story abot what makes us human, about love (not only to a person, but to your whole nation), about the nature of gods...
Read it, it will amaze you

This book is fast paced action and it delivers. If you're expecting an exceptional use of the english language then prepare to be disappointed. It is a fun and delicious fantasy story that combines many different elements the young girl on a quest, the oddball hero and the battle between good and evil, all used to great effect. It is not a pretentious book but a simple read no word weaving only action. But read this before bed and be prepared to have a smile on your face. I was left wishing I was Valkyrie Cain and I wanted to be 10 again so I could reenact some of the fight scenes without looking too silly.

A beautifully written and worthy sequel to Ingo. Both my children (ages 14 and 10) enjoyed this and I read 'Ingo' and 'The Tide Knot' on their recommendation. I now see what the seduction is. It's heartening to see such good, stimulating writing for children out there. I can't remember reading anywhere such sensual descriptions of the sea, or the sea shore in a children's book. You can almost smell the Cornish coast in this writing. Wonderful!

brilliannt! I have just finished reading this trilogy for about the 10th time and i have to say they are a firm favorite on my book shelf. Quite possibly my favorite books ive ever read.
In the final book of the trilogy we see gemma trying to keep the realms in order while dealing with problems in her own world. her father is dying, grandmama is being a nightmare and her brother tom is becoming entangled with the workings of the rakshana. while felicity and ann also struggle to sort themselves out the real focus is on gemma and her workings in the realms. But also we see the intense relationship bewteen gemma and kartik come to a head. i have to say that out of the trilogy this isnt my favorite as i would have liked a different end to the series but i loved ... Having read the Harry Potter books and the Children of the Red King series I can wholeheartedly say that I prefer Jenny Nimmo's books to JK Rowling's. I found Midnight for Charlie Bone completely encapsulating and I have re-read it multiple times.

The story is about a 10 year old boy (called Charlie Bone) who learns that he possesses an "endowment", a type of supernatural gift. He is soon forced into attending Bloors academy (a private school for the Arts & endowed children). Whilst at the academy he uncovers a mystery of a missing girl and with the help of his friends Fidelio, Olivia, Benjamin & Gabriel and the hindrance of his horrible Grandmother and Great Aunts he uncovers the mystery lurking within Bloors academy.

I really enjoyed the 5th Harry Potter book and mainly for the creation of Professor Umbridge! J.K. Rowling has created such a good villain with this character, I really could not stand the woman by the end of the book and the reader could really identify with the characters frustration with this vile and unfair woman. This book really sees the main charcacters growing up and is darker than the previous ones, I thought it was brilliant.

My two boys of 4 and 16 months just adore this book. I borrowed it from the library but I really need to buy a copy of our own now. The images are bright and imaginative and will give you a lot to talk about. The rhyming story is well thought out and totally hilarious. The language of the aliens is like a comedy sketch - 'inky pinky elakmar' - which my son keeps on repeating. My older son is not reading yet but he knows the languages inside out. The images of the aliens eating is just sooo well drawn and urgh. Buy this book. You will not be disappointed. Funny, funny, funny.
