Although it has its moments, it has alot of superflous dialogue and can be quite difficult for children to understand at times. It is also quite racist in how it describes particular people, which although obviously acceptable (from a publishers point - not mine)when it was first printed, it is not now, and I was quite disappointed that an author of this calibre felt the need to use such words. Could be a lovely, adventurous story in half the words!

Stroud's book comes with a formidable reputation, mainly on the back of its phenomenal sales; however, without wanting to be too harsh, the book is ultimately disappointing. The basic premise - young boy becomes wizard - is disturbingly familiar, not just from the Harry Potter series. The setting and back story, however, are more original: Stroud introduces us to 1984-esque world in which wizards rule over the "commoners", where its historical figures are hauntingly familiar - Gladstone and Disraeli as a pair of legendary, rival wizards. Unfortunately, the book fails at the most fundamental level. The characters of Nathaniel and Bartimaeus are poorly and two-dimensionally drawn; depth of narrative is sacrificed for frequent, dull references ... Read More:

I came across this book while ordering more astrosaur titles for my son, the only non fiction books he read at the time. He loved it immediately and finished this and the next title in two days. He can't get enough now!
I like the style and am reminded a little of the old Enid Blyton books with the five friends. My son feels drawn in by the storyline and imagines himself in the heroes' shoes. It's been our discovery of the summer!

This is a warining to anyone who enjoyed the books, do not purchase this audio cd. I have currently listened and was very impressed with the Gerrard Doyle version of Eragon and Inheritance. So I was expecting the same standard of interpretation with this cd, I was sadly mistaken. Kerry Shale has done the book an injustice, mispronounced the ancient words, called Angela - Angella, Eragon sounds like a cowboy from the old west and Roran sounds like a surfing dude!!! After the first disc, I just switched it off and will be buying the Gerrard Doye version - the true version.

I have just acquired this book, having grown up with the abridged version. I had never realised how much I was missing! It is wonderful to finally have the complete text, and just in time for Christmas too. Quentin Blake's illustrations are of course very different from Faith Jacques' in my old copy, and less to my taste, but if they bring new readers to this wonderful book, then that is all to the good. Don't forget The Midnight Folk, too, it is just as good.

I really enjoyed the 5th Harry Potter book and mainly for the creation of Professor Umbridge! J.K. Rowling has created such a good villain with this character, I really could not stand the woman by the end of the book and the reader could really identify with the characters frustration with this vile and unfair woman. This book really sees the main charcacters growing up and is darker than the previous ones, I thought it was brilliant.

After my son had seen the film of the same name, he was really keen to read the story for himself.

I thought that this set was really well presented - they are all hardcover and have lovely pictures inside - and a nice set for a child to keep.

So far my son has read 3 of the books and has loved every one.

The Golem's Eye fills in the necessary detail between book one (Amulet of Samurkand) and book three (Ptolemy's gate). It shows us Nathaniel's transformation into the darker John Mandrake. A good read, but the gem of the trilogy is Ptolemy's Gate. Stroud is definitely amongst the top ten writer's of this genre. Make sure you have at least read The Amulet of Samurkand first though!

this series could have been so much better, but Philip Pullman Decided he would rether have someing contreversial in stead of something gerat like the lord the ring. but i will give he ceradit at lest for the First book for coming up with something so creative. but I though that the last book sucked Monkey butt
