I bought this for a 10 year old prolific reader, who devours books faster than they can be published, because I saw that it was new in print. I read it before I gave it to him.
It is wonderful - a fantastic, fabulous and magical adventure of a boy, Tom Scatterhorn, who becomes involved in an old, ramshackle, family-owned natural history museum. It quickly becomes apparent that there is more than meets the eye - the animals on display, created by a master taxidermist in the last century, can come alive. Tom finds a portal in the museum, which enables him to travel back and forth in time, between the modern day and the years in which the museum was created, and he becomes an apprentice to the master taxidermist. He finds out that the taxidermist ... Read More:

Full of mischief & magic, my whole family wallowed in the wonder of this book. A proper faerie tale, if ever I read one.

Not sure where the comparisons to Pratchett come from, Joanne has a whole different style... and we're not just talking beards and hats here.

Yes it's long... but I came to the end all too soon.

More please!

I think this is deliberate though as it wouldn't do to have a comic tell an important story in the firefly setting just in case a new series or movie is commissioned. While that looks very unlikely now at the time this was first published it was more of a possibility.
That aside this is Ok, the art is nice and the characters are recognisable. The plot is simple and a bit too light but the characters are portrayed well, its like a filler episode of a TV series.

All 4 books of this series are brilliant.. and as previous reviews said, the size of the books are daunting, but the content of them is immense, the story soon encaptures you, and your waiting for the next book to come.. BRilliant.. i love how Every little detail of the history of the land in the book and how everything is so mysterious and supernatural in a sense.
fantasdtic read for those fantasy lovers

This book is incredible! i read it in 1 day as i couldn't put it down and sped through it. Alison's desciptions were first class and it left me wanting for more, you can believe that these world's nd poeple exsit. :)

Maerad's/Cadvan's relationship is very intense and when they argue it made me feel sad and i can really relate to it.

When Arkan comes in to the picture it is obvious, to me, that maerad and him are destined to belong together and the small reactions and emotions that they show when they are together sends shivers down my spine.

My one critisism is that Maerad and Arkan really should have kissed once just before he reads the runes on her lyre it would have just completed the whole "Je ne sais quoi"

i adored it and carn't ... Read More:

So, we had the series kicking off to a great start with Mister Monday before confirming its amazingness with the awesome Grim Tuesday (still the best one in my opinion) and adding a new depth and maturity in Drowned Wednesday. But with Lady Friday we have something of an enigma. It is still the same series we know and love, still the same characters and overall feel... but somehow, the energy and pace that made the other books such a joy to read isn't present as much here.

There is still plenty to enjoy here though, by the time you get to the middle of the book where Arthur is well stuck in to the conflict between the various factions and Denizens of the Middle House, things perk up and the 5th part of the Will and the welcome return of the ... Read More:

This book was excellent - as soon as I finished it I went straight back to the beginning and started again.
I think it is the best one so far and probably one of the best books I have ever read.
The ending was a bit strange as you didn't find out what happened to some of the characters - e.g: one of the students 'dies' but later comes back to life without a proper explanation.
I hope there will be another book.

Meyer's idea of a teenage girl falling for the "ideal" teenage boy is faltered by one thing : the standard of writing. I have to say, I was gripped by the twists and turns of the plot and remained completely engrossed as the majority of readers found. However, I felt as though the reader had no one to identify with in the novel as the situation was wholly too "perfect" to be taken seriously. Overall, a fantastic read I would say for 13-15 age range, older readers will passively enjoy it but find that it is more fairy tale than real life.

This field guide to accompany the Spiderwick stories is an amazingly beautifully written and illustrated guide to invisible magical creatures like Brownies, Boggarts, Piskies, Gargoyles, Banshees, Changelings, Pixies, Salamanders, Phookas, Dragons, Giants, Goblins, Merfolk, Sea Serpents etc and some wonderful rare creatures like the 'Stray Sod' who will make you chuckle.

It's an A4 sized book in the style of a really old journal with browned pages and picture plates. Some of the inner pages open upwards and some double fold outwards. The content can't be faulted, really it is truly magical. Letters and old newspaper stories interweave the descriptions giving it a real journal feel.

The only slight gripe I have is is the modern presentation. The dust jacket is thin paper and ... Read More:

I bought this book just for fun and didn't have any expectations. So I was pleasantly suprised by the good irony and humor. The story wasn't bad either. I'm all ready waiting for the next one.
