In Guards! Guards!, Terry Pratchett places Ankh-Morpork in danger by releasing a dragon. And producing the most unlikely heroes in the world: Captain Sam Vimes, a worthless drunk, Fred Colon a overweight sergeant, Nobby Nobbs chain smoking thief and allround good guy and Carrot the Discworlds tallest dwarf.

Together they are the Night Watch the city's last line of defence. Pratchett parodies the cop genre in fine style by making Vimes a mix of Sherlock Holmes and Dirty Harry. The plot is full of comedy, drama and romance (of sorts) with loveable characters like Cut-Me-Own Throat Dibbler, snobbish clerks like Wonse and deadly serious Vetinari who is annoying but likeable.

With these elements Guards! Guards! is a great ... Read More:

I read the book that this film purports to be based on back in the 70s - I live in the East End of London and knew the places described in the book and could imagine them under twelve feet of water - and I avoided the Underground for quite some time after reading it!

I'd heard that this film was'nt much good, so I waited till it was cheap enough on the High Street for me not to care if I wasted only a few quid.

Let's take the points that led me to that conclusion: the Barrier is run by a woman with the American accent that's obligatory in British films; her ex-husband runs the engineering firm responsible for maintaining the Barrier, and his father is the "lone voice" that no one believes until it's almost too late. Cue unneccessary ... Read More:

I found this book to be very clear in its discussions and explanations of 'difficult' physics.

My only quibble is precognition - I have experienced precognition several times and I don't
agree with the author that it is impossible.

I agree with other reviewers, this is really quite different from the authors previous books. It isn't as fast paced or colourful. I bought this for my 3 year old niece. She liked it but i don't think it will be read as much as her other Julia Donaldson books. It is a lovely book though.

Although supposedly a book for younger audiences, the Wee Free Men would be enjoyable for any Discworld fan no-matter what their age. The book follows Tiffany Aching, a young farmgirl who must deal with an invasion of nightmare creatures, the disappearance of her younger brother and her own burgeoning power. All she has to help her is a frying pan, a book on the Diseases of the Sheep and the Wee Free Men, tough and drunken pictsies who enjoy a good fight.

Although the book does get off to something of a bad start it does pick up as you read and it turns into a greatly entertaining story. Terry Pratchett is a brilliant righter and this book is a great exposition of his strengths being funny, thoughtful and inventive all at the same time. The book does have ... Read More:

This book was a very ancient candidate on my "to read list" and I always planned to read it just before the Lord of the Rings. So far, things have worked out and I have started Lord of the Rings the same afternoon I finished the Hobbit.

I don't think I would enjoy Lord of the Rings as much as I do, had I not read the Hobbit just beforehand. The Hobbit really provides the reader with a lot of background information, which is an advantage when you get started with the trilogy.

Nevertheless, I still feel that, as a stand - alone story, the Hobbit is a book aimed at children. Tolkien's fluid writing style and the way in which he addresses his readers, often gave me the impression that the author was right next to me, lecturing about hobbits in a style ... Read More:
