I found this story by Stephen King a little unusual to his typical style of horror, but nevertheless, I thought it was an excellent idea and a gripping read. The horror in this book doesn't come from ghosts, vampires or an alien force, but from human terror inflicted by an imaginary/future government who organize an annual long walk for teenage boys. The winner has everything to gain and the losers have everyting to lose. The Long Walk is a frightening event and along it, the participants must learn how far they can push their bodies and minds.

Hamilton knows how to write a good character. Most of the (very many) people that he introduces in his massive books are developed sufficiently for the reader to identify with, and even care about. I think that in Judas Unchained he has improved in that his female characters seem far more sympathetically drawn than in some of his earlier works. However, he needs a better editor! I can't be the only person who has noticed that almost the only adjective he uses is "big". By the end of the novel I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when "big" was dragged out again. And what is it with this obsession with naming the manufacturer and model of every single vehicle that is mentioned in the text? Occasional mention of a brand like Volvo, adds a dysphoric jolt, that ... Read More:

This is an excellent little humourous dictionary of things that don't actually have names, but really should (like those corrugated bits of flesh you get round your ankles from wearing too-tight socks). Good fun, and Douglas Adams fans will find lots of great jokes within, just be aware that by it's very nature this is the sort of book you'll pull off of the shelf and randomly flick through for 5 minutes from time to time, rather than something you'll sit down and read from cover to cover. Great fun, but admittedly slight, even in it's expanded form.

Ordinarily my confidence in the rating system on Amazon is very secure. Not quite so today though. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book but in no way does it deserve the fanatic praise it seems to be getting here. Lets just get to the book. The ideas for the background concepts are quite sound but execution leaves an awful lot to be desired. Various human races with an affinity for insect traits with the individual races benefitting from their insect association - Rather like a comic book hero of "*insert insect name here*-Man". It makes for some interesting traits/races and obviously individual characters gain additional ermm powers from their racial background ( some can fly, others are great warriors or good with machines ). Where it lets itself down is in the rather unfulfilled ... Read More:
