Brave New World and 1984 are considered to be the two great prophetic works of the 20th century. Yet whereas 1984 depicts a stereotypical dystopia, Brave New World depicts a world where everyone is happy, everyone is beautiful, everyone can have whatever they want. As a work of prophecy I think Brave New World is far wittier than people give it credit.
In Brave New World people are created in factories where they are designed and conditions to fit neatly in society. This eliminates families which eliminates any associated problems. People are happy and beautiful, there is no hunger, no disease and no war, and in the rare occassion when something does go wrong they have soma, the perfect drug. Recreational sex is encouraged at all levels ... Read More:

I was only half way through reading Chance's Cassie Palmer series when I came across this book, and oh my god. Even though I relaized Chance was a good author, I didn't realise how subtle and beautiful it really is.

Being a fan of Louis-Cesare anyway, I loved the fact he was in this book aswell. Dory is the predictable tomboyish heroine, but it really works you into a false sence of "oh, I know what's going to happen" before something totally unexpected hits you.

This book had me gripped from the first page, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone.

Having never read a book in the Culture series before, I wasn't sure what to expect.

I was soon drawn into a fascinating world filled with devious, subtle and herioc characters. Then suddenly the scope of the book changes and we realise that the world that is being described is just one level, of a multi-leveled shellworld. Each level filled with bizarre and wonderful lifeforms. The shellworld itself is only a small part of an enormous and complicated Universe.

To those who found this book rather slow, I would say that it is a perfect book for a Culture beginner - the slightly slower pace at the beginning makes it truly breathtaking when the reader is taken into outside the familiar eighth level into a galaxy of intruige and spectacle. ... Read More:

This epic scale fantasy series is a must for anyone who loves the genre. It is not strange that this book receives so many star reviews- it is one of the best out there. I started reading this book and got frustrated often, but I could not stop thinking of the characters. The characters are human, not black and white, evil and good. You often find yourself sympathetic towards the "bad guys" and frustrated with the so-called "good guys" it is realistic, people die, even characters that you think might be essential to the plot. This is not some predictable story where the protagonists live or die at the very end- Anything can happen.
In short, buy the first of the series and give it a try- if you don't get hooked then this series is not for you- higly recomended ... Read More:

See what happens when three children, Jo, and his two sisters, Bessie and Fannie, discover their very own Enchanted Wood, and meet new friends Silky the Fairy, Moon-Face and the Saucepan Man who all live in the magical Faraway Tree. Their real adventures begin when they all climb up and discover the most thrilling and peculiar! Lands that exist beyond the clouds at the top of the tree which some are good and some rather confusing and some plain dreadful. I like most of the Lands and characters like the angry pixie, Mr Watizname and Dame Washalot.
The characters are funny and some of the lands are very exciting like the land of snow and ice where there are evil snowman and even Santa Claus.

Set between the firefly TV series and the serenity movie this introduces dust devils, browncoat terrorists. If you have no idea what I am talking about watch firefly. Anyway because it is set between two established stories there is a limit to what the writers can do witht the characters. As a result the story isn't that strong, but the characters are excellenty written and it is a joy to read. roll on volume 3.

With the exception of Haunted, I have rated every Kelley Armstrong book 5 stars. It always saddens me when I can't do that, and unfortuanately this is the case with Living with the dead.

LWTD carries on from Hope's story Personal Demon, don't let the dust jacket fool you into thinking this is Robyn's book, she hardly gets any page time. It supposedly attempts to answer the question, what happens when a human gets thrown into the dark side of the Otherworld?

This is the first time Armstrong uses the third person narrative and we have five different view points to contend with. This means that we are really actually dealing with five different stories as whilst the plots do relate to each other, the different characters all have very separate issues to contend with.
