One of the excellent Collins range of books on the flora and fauna of the British Isles (see also Valerie Thom's "Scottish Birds"), this identifies over 350 wild flowers found in Scotland. The author groups these into four distinctive habitats, recognising, however, that there can be some overspill. It's a well-illustrated little tome, convenient for the pocket or rucksack, listing places to visit and explore, and even offering you the Gaelic name for each of the specimens. Scotland is a wonderful country for walking - but Scott's guide demonstrates that walking is an exercise for the mind as well as the body. Take time to look around, to admire the plantlife. It's a life-affirming activity. Excellent little book.

At first I found this novel difficult to focus on - the start simply didn't interest me. However, by the start of part two, I was hooked. The writing was top quality and the variety of techniques kept the book interesting. As I read about the lives of the different characters, I found myself desperate to know more about them. The ending was filled with hope after the horrific events of Maria's life during her period of fame, which was great because I grew to love the characters within the novel and part of me would have been gravely disappointed had they not of resolved even a few of their issues. Overall, great book. Just be patient and keep at it if, like me, you find the beginning unappealing - it does get better!

I found this book very useful, ended up doing cycles especially on Islay. The guide chooses the best routes with enough info to easily plan the day's cycling. Great presentation and the small format made it the perfect guide for this trip. Landor Gillespie

Goldsworthy does it again! Page after page of incredible acheivements, a book you could marvel at for hours. Less extensive than some of his other books, though nevertheless just as amazing. This book demonstrates the patience and determination of this awe-inspiring artist. Fantastic photography, as always, really does his work justice. A must have for all Goldsworthy fans, and at the price, why not!

This is an informative, compact book, with a good mix of information. It concentrates on the mountains, but also has useful information on low level walks, places of interest and beaches. It is ideal for hill walkers who also want to be able to plan 'family' activities in the area. It is less dry and more accessible than my edition (not the current one) of the SMC guide to the North-West Highlands, which covers a larger area but is probably the nearest equivalent. The diagrams are useful and the photos are well chosen. I would have rated the book even higher if the author had expanded the book a little and included more variations on the largely standard routes that he has included.
