As a fellow munro completionist (it took me 5 years, not one) I can throughly recommend this book to the 'serious' scottish mountain walker. The information provided on mountain routes, terrain, bothy location and condition, campsites and access are invaluable. If you plan to climb the munros starting from a car park it may be less relevant. Chris recounts his tale with humour, insight into local and historical issues, and not a little ranting that must come from too many days and nights spent in remote places (no wonder he had to divert home on occasion). That said information and tips provided on gear, what to carry / not to carry, even dealing with the ubiquitous midge, makes this a solid reference book.

It is truly incredible how these old stories remain gripping to the sensitive reader of today. The characters are surprisingly well rounded, and the events have a magic halo due to the many centuries that have gone by, so the result is a mix of myth, history, poetry, epic and legend that will no doubt appeal to any curious reader.

The writing in this book is often beautiful, perceptive and amusing, for example Domenica's exchange with Pat regarding Bruce and aesthetics. The insistence on the legal phrase (like "Peploe?") so charming in the No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency series (like "Mr J.L.B. Maketoni") palls after a few chapters. The device of the Scotland Street tunnel (real enough) with its side tunnel (so real?) leads to embarrassment for the Conservative Party. Nothing wrong there either, I suppose. But from what point of view does the author view his characters? Are they warm, human and important to him? Or do they move in the precise niceness of a traditional satire? Which characters in Edinburgh meet with the approval of the author? Are readers to understand that all characters ... Read More:

I have heard alot of talk about how this book is definitive in modern novels, however I would rather stick to novels that actually speak modern language. Such an old vocabulary is no longer used in modern society, so why praise a terrible book that embraces this?

The story of Eileen's life to the age of 16 covers many issues that are very unsettling to think about, but Eileen's writing style is effortlessly frank and very easy to read. I read it in a couple of days - I haven't read a book that quick in years!

I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone who is interested in all forms of life experience - fear, humour, grief and strength of character.
