I bought this book largely on the strength of the other two reviews that were in place here on Amazon; both reviews described the book as being "so much more" than a "standard" hooligan book. When it arrived on my doorstep (I live in the USA) I happily ripped the packaging apart before tearing into the book with focused eyes. I read the first 70 pages in what felt like an hour, which was quick even for me. McCall's description of his city, plus what I imagined to be his enchanted Scottish homestead close to the Dundonian centre - and its two football grounds - had my nostalgia sense clicking into overdrive. I myself am a writer (author of "Perry Boys", a book in a similar genre) and I lapped up the images of little Kenny McCall peeping over ... Read More:

This was my first fair isle book purchase. I found the Origins of the Patterns fascinating, Design Techniques and Colour is very informative about choices of patterns, large and small designs and at the back there is a large directory of different patterns to choose from.

A lovely first time fair isle book.

Anything I've ridden in this book has been fantastic. I've heard similar comments from several riders on various internet forums about days I've still to try.I can't wait to get out and do them. Even without those comments , the pictures and descriptions just make you want to go out and tackle the routes. Another good thing is that is that the book is split into different areas with road maps that show where all the routes are in relation to one another.
The only other comparable book has nearly 50% of its content taken up by marked FC trails. While thats a great idea for anyone who has no knowledge of where they are , it's not really what I'm looking for in a guide book. All I need to do for that sort of stuff is to contact the FC or IMBA then ... To read Alasdair Gray, a man who interrupts his own interruptions, is a joyful nosedive into freewheeling post-modernist headspin. The only way to do it is to let go, let it happen and trust the author's bounce will keep you from smacking into the ground. Old Men in Love, how do I love that title, repays that trust. Gray has enough bounce to keep us all up in the air. Here the main character takes the biscuit. John Tunnock - and, yes, you're probably supposed to wonder if that's toilet and teacake or anything else that goes with too much tea - is a wheeze, dead in mysterious circumstances, brought to life by his diaries, a writer who failed to write three novels. Why three? Why not seven, or forty seven? There is a reason. Gray is examining himself in ... Read More:

I read this book a couple of months ago and found it absolutely engrossing. I too thought it may have been written for younger people, but I think it will appeal to anyone who likes good strong tale telling and characters you come to care about, I love the narration of this book.
I am fortunate to live in Orkney, a recent move, and GMB's descriptive narrative is really spot on in capturing these islands and her own people.

This is one of the best and most original works written about early medieval Scotland. It is a must read for all interested. The reviewer Novantae's criticism about Fortriu is both axe-grinding and silly. 1) The argument had already been advanced in the SHR and 2) it has already achieved something resembling consensus in the historical community. It is not particularly controversial, though the particular related suggestion (not important in the book) that the battle of Dunnichen took place in the north is. Woolf's work is far superior to the treatment given of the period by both Duncan and Smyth (standing where we are now at least); though daring in parts (new ideas are everywhere), it is a very sophisticated historiographic work ... apparently a bit too ...
