One or two reviewers down: Wasn't Mary thee times a widow? Bothwell died before her too, I seem to recall. Quite horribly, too: he was locked up in a dungeon in some castle in Denmark. He was held there, chained to a stone pillar, for ten years. In that time nobody spoke to him (his wardens were expressly forbidden to do so) and his food and drink was brought through a small trap door. After a few years he was a raving lunatic and after that, for the last two to three years he was there, completely catatonic. When he hadn't touched his food for two weeks, they looked in on him and found his dead body clothed in scraps and rags, covered in filth, sores and vermin. He had starved to death. Just got this book through the post. Great service by the way. It's packed full of routes right across the central belt and as far north as Loch Rannoch - mainly day routes on and off-road with trails taking you through lots of country I haven't tried. As well as family friendly routes there are several two-day trips in and around Loch Lomond. All I need now is the weather! Definitely recommended.

This book is fantastic! It captures the flavour of 1950s and early 1960s Glasgow so perfectly; the streets, the parks, the stairheeds - and all the best parts of growing up in the city, from building bogies and riding on the trams and old subways to playing marbles on the drains (and, of course, running away from the polis!). It is a beautifully written, evocative and always entertaining read. It is also extremely moving in places. Above all, though, it is absolutely hilarious! I laughed out loud all the way through. Anyone who knows Glasgow will love it - and for anyone who grew up there in the 1950s and 1960s, it is just essential. It would make a perfect present for a Glaswegian x

I actually reread the Finlay J MacDonald Omnibus twice as I loved the style he used to recreate the times of his youth. Being from a Scottish village in Cape Breton, Canada, I could identify with the customs and situations Finlay encountered with those seen in our own Gaelic community. I loved it and I hope many others get to enjoy it also.
