A brilliant book from a brilliant man, yet again. This time a 'Special'about Bloody Scotland! When I met Terry, at a book signing event, he was just as funny in the flesh! He confided to me, that THEY (The Scots, presumably!) tried to sue over this particular title! To this day I still don't know whether he was pulling my leg or not! The History of Scotland as you want to read it! We'd say this is excellent reading for both children and adults, Scottish or otherwise!

I've enjoyed this book immensely since I found it in a little shop in Gairloch. Its compelling title drew me in and as soon as I saw Scotland's geology was being discussed with that of the Moon and Mars, I knew Rider was on the right track. At times, Rider leans a bit heavily on the terms and expressions he knows so well from his geology background and gentler guidance for the reader would help get some of the finer points of geology across. I also could have done without the rants about wind farms. They seemed so out of place in such a good book. Nevertheless, Rider ably mixes fine storytelling of a human dimension with the awe of Earth's history and context in the Solar System. Well done, Malcolm Rider. Your book is a gem.

A great read and the perfect guide for the professional or amatuer. If your planning a road trip or just fancy a change from your local break then I can highly recommend this guide. We spent two weeks travelling GB and found loads of spots we'd never heard of. It's also nice to support a fellow female surfer. Have also bought the european guide which we plan to use this autumn, will let you know how we get on!

Just got this book through the post. Great service by the way. It's packed full of routes right across the central belt and as far north as Loch Rannoch - mainly day routes on and off-road with trails taking you through lots of country I haven't tried. As well as family friendly routes there are several two-day trips in and around Loch Lomond. All I need now is the weather! Definitely recommended.

yep! jay allen gets most of it right he is good at fiction cos most of the hibs aberdeen games i was at hibs chased aberdeen away even in thier own town he calls edinburgh pepole chocolate heads yeah but we still kicked their ass,but yeah a good read enough to send any scarfer to the closest designer clothes shop but hey it's all died a death now as the big lads have went into other activeitys such as drugs,prostitution and extorsion.hibs will always be number one as we showed aberdeen on numerous occasions

We used this book recently during a sojourn to the Scottish Borders. We travelled extensively on several of the suggested routes and overall found the book to have well thought out circular routes that took you on journeys you were unlikely to have planned yourself. Some of the details of the places en-route were a bit sketchy, so you may need to supplement this guide with another. Personally, we used "Scotland The Best" by Peter Irvine to suggest places to eat and for finding walks along with "CAMRA Good Beer Guide" to suggest a place for a decent pint after the walk - Don't Drink and Drive though!.

This was the first of the Icelandic saga's that I read. Any misconceptions about them being overly scholarly or dull were completely removed within a few pages. I found the text surprisingly 'alive' and was gripped throughout. Tales of mythology, murder, intrigue with a flowing narrative and writing style, all based around the isles of Orkney. Without a doubt one of my very favourite books and one that has lead me into many other superb sagas. Particularly of interest if you've any connection to Orkney, Shetland or Northern Scotland, as the book gives in depth details of dates, names and place names throughout.
