171.The Tin Drum by: Gunter Grass

Books : The Tin Drum
This is the story of a boy growing up in Germany between 1927 and 1954 - in the Free City of Danzig until 1945, then in Düsseldorf - with a couple of fantastical wrinkles: he is able to shatter glass at will by yelling at it, and he deliberately decides not to grow and remains the size of a three-year-old until the war (and even then he grows only to four feet tall).

I found it pretty fascinating. The liminal identities of what is now northwestern Poland are vividly brought to life - various members of our hero's family are forced to identify themselves as Polish or German, though their roots are in fact Kashubian; and the growth of Nazism, and the consequences of it, told in a tone which I found descriptive rather than preachy. ... 173.Edelweiss by: Madge Swindells

Books : Edelweiss
I have now read, digested and enjoyed several Swindells novels. I strongly believe that Edelweiss has been her best. If you enjoy reading and finding out about Europe's dark history during the Second War World, this is the book for you. Swindell mixes a clever concotion of love, heroism and espionage along with elements of pure human wickeness and human survival. I love this book. I dare you not to care and marvel about this story of fiction that is set in time the world was upside down and the rawness of the characters described before you glue to every page.

Books : Marking Time
This, the second in the series, was not quite so absorbing as the first but was still a most enjoyable read. I have just ordered the last two books in the series so that I can see what happens next!

For Valour invites comparison with The Cruel Sea by Nicholas Monsarrat. Wars are fought by people, not machines and has been described as months of boredom and seconds of terror. Reeman captures all of this as well as the sheer exhaustion which must have set in among those who had survived several years of the war. The enemy was not only the German Navy, but the ocean and the cold of the arctic.

World War II was a war which involved the home front as well. The irony of sailors in harm's way losing families at home is portrayed well. The characters are human and vulnerable, and entirely believable. They have the courage to continue human involvements in the face of separation and loss. All in all, the book is immensely moving and a good description ... Read More:

"... you had a gun on me twice, and both times you let me go. A girl gets to appreciate that sort of thing." - from THE ASSASSINS GALLERY

My first chance at THE ASSASSINS GALLERY was the initial thirty-six pages I finished on AMTRAK's Southwest Chief on the overnight leg from Los Angeles to Albuquerque, where I disembarked from the train and mistakenly left the book behind to continue on to Chicago all by itself. This was no small loss as I'd been hooked by what I'd read so far and thus had to purchase a second copy once I returned home. (I just hate it when that happens, don't you?)

In the opening chapter, a mysterious submarine surreptitiously drops off a passenger on an isolated stretch of the Massachusetts coast on January 1, 1945. ... Read More:

178.HMS "Flexible" by: A.E. Langsford
November 05, 1992
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Books : HMS "Flexible"
This is the most amazing book as the publishers have spelled the title incorrectly. Everywhere but in the large print on the title the book and ship are referred to as HMS Inflexible. Did no one notice? Did no one ever notice! Unbelievable!
The story is the third in the series following Captain Robert Thurston in HMS Marathon and HMS Crusader. Crusader has been sunk on the Arctic Run and third time survivor Thurston is given the aircraft carrier HMS Inflexible to take to the Pacific, based in Australia, during the final months of WWII.
