My review of 'Mila 18' by Leon Uris seems to have got lost somewhere in cyberspace. Never mind. If you want to read a book about a group of Jews fighting back during WWII, this one is much better, anyway. It starts rather slowly, but as more characters are introduced, a tapestry of pictures and stories emerge from what begins as a rather grey fabric. By the end of the book they had become my family. They are a small band of men and a few women who carry on small scale guerilla warfare on the German side of the eastern front during the Russian advance across eastern Europe. They tramp from White Russia, through the Pripet Marshes, through Poland and Germany, eventually ending up in post-war Italy. They fight no great battles, and are under ... Read More:

Len Deighton is probably one of the most underrated British writers. This may have to do with so called intelectuals' problems in accepting writers who also write entertainment. What makes Deighton great is both the very beautiful prose he writes, his characters and his minute knowledge of the war. Bomber is one of his most impressive offering being a testament to suffering and courage on both sides. I could go on for ages now what a great book Bomber is. However, I won't because this BBC production, impressive as it is, does not do justice to Deighton's great book. First of all, it is way too short. This leads to a loss of all those tales of everyday life and of individual fate that make the tragic events even more shocking. This contrast is one of the great ... Read More:

If you loved Olivia Manning`s The Balkan Trilogy, then you will equally love The Levant Trilogy which takes place in Egypt.
Most of the characters from The Balkan are gone, but don`t panic cause Guy and Harriet are still here(wouldn`t be the same without)and we are also introduced to a whole new group of characters who are equally interesting and likeable.
I agree with another reviewer on here.Mrs Mannings descriptions and observations of war are staggering and beautifull and you really feel like you are climbing up the pyramids with Guy and Harriet or driving along the Sphinx. It is funnier than the Balkan Trilogy and is moving without being sentimental.
Recommended to all fans of The Balkan Trilogy. You will be sorry to finish it,i was.

The Wedding Officer is fine as a light summer read, but the book that it draws the majority of its incidents from is so much better: Naples '44: An Intelligence Officer in the Italian Labyrinth. Norman Lewis' book, taken from his diaries whilst serving in the Field Security Service of the British Army, is full of insight, observation and compassion as well as being beautifully written.

"In war it is inevitable that only one side can triumph, but honour and self-sacrifice are not the sole attributes of the victors". Douglas Reeman's words, from the prefatory blurb, put this novel accurately in context. Surprisingly and most effectively, its hero is not a Royal Navy skipper or even an American sailor, but the captain of a German cruiser. In 1944, when many Germans can already see the writing on the wall, Kapitaen zur See Dieter Hechler takes Prinz Luitpold, a Hipper class 8-inch cruiser, on a last daring commerce raid across the Atlantic.

The Hippers, formidable on paper, did not live up to their promise - partly due to unreliable machinery, and even more to inconsistent, vacillating official policy. This book suggests how much better they could have ... Read More:

Jackdaws is set during World War II, in the days, just prior to the D-Day landings. An all woman team is trained to attack a telephone exchange, vital for the German war effort, located in a heavily guarded a French chateau.

The story is seen, mainly through the eyes of British secret agent, Flick Clairet, and German intelligence officer, Dietrick Franck, who is trying to track her down.

The plot is fairly good, and there is no real dull moments. There are a few parts, in the book where the story can be a bit unbelieveable, as mentioned by other reviewers, such as how quickly the women are trained for the mission, but I would not let that put you off. A pretty good read.

This follows the same pattern as a lot of his previous WW2 books, still proving that this formula works, and works well. This book is longer than his average, although this makes it all the more interesting. A worthy read.

28.Monte Cassino (Cassell Military Paperbacks) by: Sven Hassel
August 14, 2003
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Monte Cassino (Cassell Military Paperbacks)
The hill is Monte Cassino, and the horror is the carnage of Allied attempts to wrest it from the Germans in 1944, among whom are numbered the lads of the 27th Penal Battalion.
A classic Sven Hassel, with all the right ingredients - blood, guts, fear, high comedy and magnificent courage - with the shattered monastery ruins and the seedy streets of wartime Rome as the backdrop. The plot? Defend the hill to the last man.
The outcome? A compelling tale from the master of World War Two pulp fiction.
Enjoy it.
