The story begins three years into World War II, as the new captain of the fictional battlecruiser HMS Reliant, a sister to Renown and Repulse, attends the funeral of his predecessor before going to Scotland to take command.

Douglas Reeman, who served in the Royal Navy during world war II, has become a very prolific author of seafaring novels. This is his 55th published nautical adventure: he has written 32 under his own name and 23 novels in the "Bolitho" series under the pen-name Alexander Kent.

It would be slightly cruel to say that this is his 55th variant of the same book, but only slightly. The books he wrote as Douglas Reeman are mostly tales of war at sea in the 20th century, covering almost every type of ship ... Read More:

His last good novel. After which he started his cereal(and I spelled it the way I intended to) formula stories.
In 1943 there were several attempts on Hitler's life, by his inner circle of confidants. His personality also changed the same year, from cold, and calculating to a raving lunatic. This novel postulates that one of these attempts actually succeeded, and that Hitler was replaced by one of his doubles(one that was insane) to keep the country together. Full of action, mystery, and suspense, this novel proves that he once WAS one of England's best thriller writers.

53.Torpedo Run by: Douglas Reeman

Books : Torpedo Run
In 1943 the Russians -- supported by a small flotilla of British motor torpedo boats -- fought a desperate and bitter war against Nazi Germany. After many months of reverses and losses on land and sea, Britain and the Allies had gained a foothold in Sicily, to be followed three months later by the invasion of Italy. Even along the Eastern Front the Germans were at last falling back -- but in the Black Sea the Crimean Peninsula remained firmly in German hands, the crucial hinge for the whole Russian campaign. The Russians were plagued and hampered by the daring hit-and-run tactics of German light naval forces: E-boats brought overland to be thrown into the fight.

Partly as a gesture of Allied solidarity, a flotilla of five British motor ... Read More:

Malaparte was an opportunist, social climber, raconteur and political amateur. He was also a gifted writer. How much is truth in this book, and how much is not, is actually irrelevant if one accepts this as the particular document of a fickle man during the war. The book is a series of seemingly unrelated vignettes, his encounters with personalities, most of them reviled. Whether or not Malaparte actually met them, spoke with them as he relates or whether or not he changed his opinion of them as the war for Italy took a downward course is open to conjecture. What he did do however, was to add to the mythology of war and its horrors. Himmler in a Helsinki lift and later a white blob in a sauna, and a murderer; Hans Frank as a cultured pianist, and murderer; the wives, ... Read More:

Based on the World War II experiences of the author's father and uncle, Children of Freedom is a riveting testament to the bravery of the young resistance fighters in France. The missions that they undertake almost defy belief--but then again, so do many of the horrors of the Nazi era. The final section of the book is particularly horrific and gripping. But the overall tone is curiously distancing, so that the appeal is more to the intellect than to the emotions. Some of this may be due to the English translation, which is a bit clumsy in places. On the whole, though, the book is a worthy ode to the heroes it depicts.

What an absolutley fantastic book, I've ben waiting for a book like this for years, I can't put it down. to see the original paintings is such a thrill, I started collecting war comics especialy War Picture Library since they first came out, I'm 57 now and they still have not lost their magic, even as a kid of 9 or 10 back in the late 50's, I was artracted to the art of the front covers, and I still am, I too often wondred what happen'd to the art, were they stored somewhre or dumped? what a joy it was to find that most of them survived, I wish I could own some?
David Roach has done a superb job, I tip my hat, congratulations.

Books : The Eagle Has Flown (Classic Jack Higgins Collection)
I mostly hate sequels, ruining the original be it film or book.

Eagle Has Flown is largely a copy of the Eagle Has Landed. The British traitor is in this case an American one but is a pilot. Radl's sympathetic German is now Walter Schellenberg of the SS (and architect of the proposed invasion of Britain) and so on. Interestingly, Steiner is still alive. Obviously Higgins did not intend a sequel or Steiner would not have been riddled with bullets at the end of the previous novel. However, he is alive and imprisoned (as Hess once was) in the Tower of London. Liam Devlin returns and as in Len Deighton's "SS-GB" must find a way of breaking out of the Tower with Steiner.
Sadly, it's somewhat light in entertainment compared to the previous but it's pure Higgins ... Read More:

In a war filled with terrible shocks, the fall of Singapore in 1941 was one of the worst. Impregnable from the sea, Singapore collapsed before a Japanese force fighting its way through the 'impenetrable' jungle of the Malay Peninsula. Only at the last moment did the civilians on Singapore realize the danger they were in. And then they'd do anything to get out.

This novel features two of Reeman's standard characters: the crusty, traditional, martinet career Royal Navy officer, and the young R.N. reserve officer, unpolished but skilled, and increasingly experienced as the war progresses. As is common in many Reeman novels, the tension between these two men drives much of the story in the early part of the book, until they both realize that, as another hero of the era might ... This is in fact the third (not fourth) book in the series, coming after Death's Head which deals with operation Barbarossa. The old gang train on the new Tiger tanks (there was one on the original cover but not on this one - shame when it could have been used legitimately!) then try to smash through the Russian flank at Kursk.

Again simple blood and guts action no need to worry about plot development.

Island Madness provides an intelligent and thought provoking look at the question of collaboration within an occupied territory, wrapped up neatly in a murder mystery (albeit highly original) who-dunnit. That Guernsey and a large number of its inhabitants, together with those of Jersey and Sark, endured life under Nazi rule, ensures that the line between fact and fiction becomes slightly blurred, which only accelerates the tension as this tremendous story unfolds.
