81.Mila 18 by: Leon Uris
1970-03
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Mila 18
Mila 18 is a breathtaking account of the Warsaw ghetto uprising, by the Jewish population of Warsaw, against the plans of the Nazi regime to exterminate them.
It is a great epic from the pen of one of the greatest novelists of the 20th century, Leon Uris.
The Warsaw ghetto uprisings are an important symbol of the freedom and dignity of mankind and the ongoing struggle against totalitarianism and cruelty (particular that type of cruelty that is self righteously practiced by ideologues from the left and right.).
The key characters are:
Andrei Androfski , the indomitable hero of a prestigious Polish cavalry regiment , and also a proud Jew.
Gabriella Rak , Andrei's pretty Polish sweetheart , one of the rare voices ... Read More:

What if Hitler actually listened to the right people during the war (seen from a historic pro-nazi view)? Could things have been different/better for Germany? Relevant war decisions are altered and the results are likely. A good and entertaining plot.

But even with a good plot, the book is not rated high due to the (lack of) proof reading and grammar.

Nope, don't buy it. I've read a lot of dross in my time, but I couldn't make it past the first 50 pages on either occasion I began this book. It's not that it's bad - I just found it uninteresting, the characters unengaging, and it didn't make me read on. I haven't read any other works by this author, and this wouldn't encourage me to try.

86.The Commissar by: Sven Hassel
July 21, 1985
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Books : The Commissar
As usual, Sven Hassel manages to combine the horrors of WWII with the lighter moments. It wasn't all explosions and death, the soldiers on both sides were human, not just killing machines.
In this continuing story of life in the Wermacht, Sven, Tiny, Porta and the rest become involved in one of Porta's latest scams, the tracking down of a fortune in gold!
The only problem is, the gold is in the middle of Russia and the only person who knows where it is is a Russian Commissar!
More light-hearted than Hassels earlier accounts, although he never strays far from the realities of War.
En extremely enjoyable read

I was a big fan of the early Bandy books; they had wit, subtlety, comedy, insight and a hard edge. "Hitler Versus Me" I find actually painful to read. What ought to have been a wonderful vehicle for Bart's genius and ineptitude turns out to be a marathon you have to force yourself to read, in the hope it improves as you get through it.

89.Pied Piper by: Nevil Shute
October 04, 1990
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Pied Piper
Shute wrote this in 1942, and the story plays around spring 1940. It is very much a story of its time, and about those dark days when everything was going wrong for the French, and for the English. This was true for their countries; but also very much for individuals like 70-year old Mr Howard, on a fishing holiday in the Jura to forget a personal bereavement. I don't want to give the storyline away, but it starts small, and keeps growing; both the problems, and the solutions. It is very much a Shute book about the lone individual dealing with immense problems, and discovering unsuspecting humanity in many people. It is a sad and warm book at the same time.
For me this is not yet Shute at his peak - I think he reached that a bit later. Hence the four stars. ... Read More:
