This is the most helpful publication I have read on classroom management and how to avoid problems rather than deal with them. My copy was given to me by my former headmaster when I began my teaching career sixteen years ago and I find myself quoting from it spontaneously as I guide Beginner Teachers. The advice is timeless and will help you to create a calm and orderly environment in which your pupils can learn most effectively. As Marland states, teachers are not 'born', they learn their skills, and this book will give trainees a headstart in doing just that.

Don't even attempt to survive a History PGCE without this book. It has already become a classic and doubtless features on every reading list in the country, but if possible get your own copy so that you can read and re-read it at your leisure (of which there isn't much on a PGCE course!). The authors cover each of the National Curriculum Key Elements, as well as issues which dominate inspection worries, such as assessment and the use of ICT. Throughout there is a helpful mixture of advice, principle and example activities. There is also an excellent chapter on getting a job and continuing to improve your teaching skills. Essential reading.

I found this book to be very informative, the contrasts betwwen BEd and PGCE students did mean that I could focus my attentions to the areas where, statisically, I would be weak. I also found that this was a book where I could dip into, to find a particular topic that was pertinent to my areas of development. However I did find that there other books that were easier to read and less 'wordy' for instance - "Learning to Teach - Gill Nicholls"
