This book was in my local library and as I had not heard of either Christian O'Connell or the Men Commandments I was curious.

I found it to be well written and highly entertaining, and had to check and ensure that my wife was still at home as Christian's description of his wife was so true to the way that I imagine mine to be that I thought they must be related.

I did wonder how he managed to write the book and remain living and actually wrote to him and asked if he was a re-incarnation of his former self following it's publication. He replied that he now knew how Salmon Rushdie felt and that he had gone into hiding.

To me, it was a book that you could open at virtually any page and find something amusing ... Read More:

This book is brilliant! It uses maps of the world to display data by distorting the physical size of countries according to the relevant data - the result is a very visual feel for the data - much more powerful than figures or words could be. Every page has a global map displaying a different set of data and the range of data is huge, spanning from spread of diseases to energy use, from prevalence of national disasters to effectiveness of legal systems.

The book is pretty large and an ideal coffee table read. You don't need to be particularly analytical to get a lot from it - just need to be interested in the world. A fantastic new way of looking at the world.

I love it! The children in my class love it!

It is full of literacy starters and games to get children thinking. It fits really well with the Ros Wilson 2020 / Big Writing and the Literacy Hour.

I wouldn't be without it.

While the premise is genius, the amount of typos in the book ruin it. Who are 'The Smith's'? When did Lionel Richie sing 'I Just Called To Say I Love You'?

It's a shame, because the idea is great. Perhaps it would have been an idea to get a proofreder in before rush-releasing it for Xmas, though? (Mind you, I would say that - I am a proofreader!)

"Eating for England" is a Pick n' Mix of a book. Read it all in one go and it gets repetitive and downright indigestible. But there are a few sweet and well-written little pieces within that make the book worthwhile. I would not really recommend this to anyone under 30 or over 65: and if you are the sort of person who is quickly bored by 40-somethings reminiscing about BBC children's programs of the 1960s or long-vanished crisp flavours, then you should give it a miss, too.

Where Nigel Slater's book rises above the standard nostalgia-trip, it does so because he can write well on occasions and his genuine love of food comes through. But there were far too many instances when a well-written piece was followed by yet another push for Farmers' ... Read More:

I reviewed the original edition of this book in my introductory volume to the "Hollywood Classics" series, Hollywood Classic Movies 1: New Light on Movie Bests. Although a number of minor issues have been rectified, my main complaint that the book is overbalanced in favor of the 1960s and onwards is still justified. Admittedly, many readers like my daughter (who will not watch anything in black-and-white), will regard this as a virtue rather than a demerit. But there's no denying that this bias has led to the exclusion not only of many of the cinema's greatest masters, but even to some of the most popular and critically acclaimed vintage movies that are still currently being aired on television and issued on DVD. While this book replaces many of these classics by concentrating ... Read More:

This is a good book, entertainingly written and both stimulating and challenging in terms of its topic and content. Published recently (towards the end of September)and weighing in at in excess of 500 pages it is also an absorbing read. But what exactly is it about? Like the rest of the book, the title is pretty clear and open about this.

Even so, it would be easy for certain readers to take one look at the book's topics and shudder; these include the vexed subject of globalisation, energy shortages, international crime syndicates, the worry of both nuclear proliferation and small arms proliferation, international drugs 'trafficking', climate change, water shortages, varieties of population migration, various epidemics, the denigration and deterioration of the nation ... A concise, readable, and punchy description of the manner in which a number of historical societies rendered their way of life obsolete and destroyed themselves by failing to adapt and to think ahead.

He describes as "progress traps" the apparent improvements of technology or culture which are too effective for the survival of the society which deploys them. For example, when hunting societies moved from catching individual animals to wiping out whole herds by driving them over cliffs it gave a short-term bonanza but soon led to the elimination of their food supply.

Particularly powerful is the description of the way the society of Rapa Nui, on what we call Easter Island, destroyed first the local ecology and consequently itself by felling every tree on the island ... Read More:
