Before buying this book I attempted the online practice test (and failed!) after going through the book it highlighted areas I needed to work on. The book also provides example questions which are very similar to the test questions. I would not have passed first time without this book.

I can only add to the unalloyed praise of others and wish that Nella Last could know what pleasure and enlightenment her "scribbling" would bring to others over 60 years later. She writes beautifully and naturally, but what's most interesting is the way she changes as the war progresses. At the beginning she is sickly and weak, plagued with arthritis, and refers to a "breakdown" she had a few years before. But she determines to "do something" for the war effort and joins the WVS. From there she goes from strength to strength, and the evolution of her ideas is fascinating; she comes to see her conventional marriage to an old stick of a husband as "slavery". I bought this book in order to increase my understanding of the current affairs in international politics. And I can certainly say that it did!! This book increased my insight but most of all it inspired me to read much more about the subject. I think it's a great introduction and I found the 'further reading guide' at the end of the chapters very helpful in exploring this extremely interesting subject!!! If you buy this book you WILL be burdened with the need to read a lot more, truly inspiring!

I used this student planner throughout university and continue to do so now, despite being a graduate. I found it extremely useful for planning my timetable and for keeping abreast of assignment deadlines. It is clear, concise and value for money!

This is a thick tomb, not so portable as a set of keys but much more portable than a well stocked library. - what you need to look up the writings of the authors mentioned in this book. This book is a tourist guide to intellectual places you have never considered visiting, or wanted to but didn't know where to start. I think this book may have been more readable to the non English Lit. graduate had the contents been presented from the most recent to the least. It takes effort to read the early entries and to understand them. Stick with it nonetheless your brain may ache from the effort but it will be fitter because of it.

This book is core reading for my course and has been an invaluable guide. It covers everything you need to know from how children learn language to how to be successful at assessment. It includes useful research summaries, interesting practical tasks all of which help develop understanding. There are lots of 'classroom stories' where real examples are used to illuminate theory. I found these to be particuarly useful as they demonstrate how to apply abstract theory to practice. As I am training to be a teacher not at educational theorist this connection is vital. This is a easy-to-understand, practical text which, along with it's sister book 'Primary English - Knowledge and Understanding', will fully prepare you for QTS. My advice is: buy it now!

I went to Madagascar to conduct my MSc dissertation research with a tent, this book and no existing knowledge of social science methodologies. I read it from cover to cover (a fairly easy read), made notes on the relevant sections, drew up my questionnaire using a mind map then conducted my interviews. I returned with loads of useful data which I managed to analyse with a few more resources available. I highly recommend this book for postgrads who need a coherent, logical bible to guide them through their research. I started out knowing nothing about methodology and ended up with a reasonable understanding... enough to get me a distinction!

Enjoyable to read and a fantastic book for anyone learning Criminology. I am doing it at A-Level, in order to get to University so found some parts challenging to understand (as the book is based at Degree level) but you really get the jist of meanings and terms. A real must have.

This books goes through all the processes of writing an essay and to me is generalisable across a wide range of subjects. I am a postgraduate and had lost my academic edge. The book takes you through reading strategies and then through writing strategies and provides great tips and ways in which to gain the most from your reading and how to write a better essay...I will highly recommend this book to my fellow postgraduates and undergrads! It has helped me gain perspective and focus and regain my academic flair.
